Beyoncé Dropped a Surprise Juneteeth Jam "Black Parade" to Spotlight Black-Owned Businesses

22/06/2020 - 08:15 PM

On Friday, Beyoncé commemorated Juneteeth in true Beyoncé fashion: by dropping a surprise new track, "Black Parade." In her first solo release since last year's The Lion King: The Gift [1], Queen Bey sings of Black liberation and empowerment — the essence of Juneteeth, which celebrates the official end of slavery in the US [2]. "We got rhythm, we got pride," she belts. "We birth kings, we birth tribes / Holy river, holy tongue / Speak the glory, feel the love."

Beyoncé promoted the release on her website [3], along with a curated directory of Black-owned businesses. "Happy Juneteenth. Being Black is your activism. Black excellence is a form of protest. Black joy is your right," she wrote on her site. "'Black Parade' benefits BeyGOOD's Black Business Impact Fund, administered by the National Urban League [4], to support Black-owned small businesses in need." Listen to "Black Parade" above, then check out Beyoncé's list of Black-owned shops and companies [5].
