During the first episode of the long-awaited Disney+ series The Book of Boba Fett, which premiered on Wednesday, Dec. 29, fans see the return of several familiar creatures like the Jawas, Tusken Raiders, and Rodians, which have existed in the Star Wars franchise for years. One character that appears to be brand new, however, is a four-armed monster that emerges from the sands of Tatooine to attack Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison). Since you likely didn't recognise it, you might be wondering, what is this sand creature, and has it been in any other Star Wars media before The Book of Boba Fett? Let me explain.

What Is the Sand Creature In The Book of Boba Fett?

In a flashback scene during the first episode of the series, Boba recalls once being taken prisoner by a group of Tusken Raiders, which are a nomadic race that resides on the planet of Tatooine. One day, a Tusken child takes Boba and a Rodian prisoner into the desert to dig for water. That's when the trio encounters a terrifying lizard-like creature that was hiding beneath the surface. The giant monster, which is covered in scales and has claws and large, sharp teeth, attacks the group and eventually kills the Rodian. Luckily, Boba is able to get on top of the creature and choke it using his chains. He and the Tusken child then take its decapitated head back to the rest of the Tusken Raiders, who now have newfound respect for Boba for taking down such a dangerous foe.

Does the Sand Creature Appear in Other Star Wars Properties?

So far, the sand creature has only appeared in The Book of Boba Fett, meaning not much is known about its species within the Star Wars world.

What Is the Sand Creature Inspired By?

Some fans think the sand creature in The Book of Boba Fett resembles the Kraken from the 1981 film Clash of the Titans. Considering George Lucas has been inspired by a number of movies to bring the Star Wars world to life, it's not far-fetched to think the sand creature could be a reference to the Kraken.

Does the Sand Creature Have a Name?

Nope! For right now, fans are just calling it the sand creature or sand monster. While not much is known about the mysterious sand creature, one thing's for sure: you'll definitely want to avoid it by all means necessary.
