It's been six years since Psych went off the air and three years since the release of Psych: The Movie, but in Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, it feels as if no time has passed for our heroes, Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill). This time around, they're out to help their friend Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) as he recovers from both a shooting and a stroke at the Herschel House Hospital. It's worth noting that the storyline involving Lassiter's recovery mirrors Omundson's own recovery from the stroke he had in April 2017 [1], which led to his reduced role in Psych: The Movie.
While Shawn and Gus sneak around Santa Barbara trying to solve Lassiter's case, their significant others, Juliet O'Hara (Maggie Lawson) and Selene (played by Hill's real-life wife Jazmyn Simon), do some sneaking around of their own; Juliet tries to find the missing bullet from Lassiter's case and Selene tries to find out if Gus is cheating on her with Lassiter's nurse, Dolores (Sarah Chalke [2]). Of course, neither group does it without enlisting help; Shawn and Gus get some assistance from Shawn's dad, Henry (Corbin Bernsen), and Juliet gets help from Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson).
The movie is filled with all the references, nicknames, and ridiculous antics you'd expect in a follow-up Psych movie. It's also the perfect tribute to Omundson, whom it was nice to see return as the Lassiter people know and love. That being said, nothing in the movie goes as planned for the investigative duo and while Lassiter is worried he may be seeing things — including the ghost of his father (played by Omundson's friend Joel McHale [3]) — Shawn and Gus run into a few old friends along the way. Kurt Fuller as Woody Strode
Shawn and Gus's favourite coroner is back and wackier than ever. Still an assistant coroner to Butterfly McMillan (the coroner from Psych: The Movie played by Julianna Guill), Woody gets sucked into Lassiter's case after Shawn and Gus send him a human hand (and a few cured meats). When Shawn's idea to dress as Dr. A.V. Catalon fails, Woody takes on the role in order to serve as their man on the inside of the Herschel House.
Sage Brocklebank as Buzz McNab
A junior detective for the Santa Barbara Police Department, Buzz makes a brief appearance at the Viking's Den crime scene after the shooting death of tech investor Devon Tileback (Antonio Cayonne). Even though he's in charge of the crime scene, he's still a big pushover, allowing Gus to take his cell phone back and letting Juliet take his car after hers gets taken by Selene.
Jimmi Simpson as Mary Lightly
Although Mary technically died in the season four finale "Mr. Yin Presents. . .," the character has come back numerous times, in both flashbacks and hallucinations. In Psych 2, Mary is a hallucination shared by both Shawn and Gus after they take some laced ice chips. However, he appears in the form of a baby, thanks to Shawn thinking that Juliet is pregnant. This leads to a rather awkward exchange resulting in Mary saying, "I'm a baby, Shawn. It's glorious, I just finished teething. Have you ever been swaddled? It's like a joyful mummification." Much like in Psych the Musical [5], there's a poignant (albeit odd) song moment between the group.
Kristy Swanson as Marlowe Lassiter
It couldn't be a Lassiter-centric film without an appearance from his ex-convict wife, Marlowe. Lassiter ends up sending Marlowe away, not wanting her to see him in his vulnerable stroke recovery state. Her name is mentioned throughout the movie as she's one of Lassiter's biggest factors into why he needs to recover. When Lassiter is released from the Herschel House, Marlowe is there to greet him. She's also the catalyst into our first glimpse of him walking since his shooting incident.
Pluto as Pluto
Although we don't actually see Pluto, it makes an appearance in a big way. Fans of the series are all too familiar with Gus's thoughts about Pluto being a planet (according to him, it is and always will be one) and how one of his most used pickup lines is, "Did you hear about Pluto? That's messed up, right?" Towards the end of the movie, as part of Selene's proposal to Gus, she asks him, "Burton Guster, will you make me the happiest woman on this planet? On Earth . . . and Pluto?" To which he replies, "And Pluto?!" It's absolutely fitting his perfect proposal includes a mention of his favourite (dwarf) planet.
