9 Christmas Adverts That Have Turned Us Into Emotional Wrecks This Year

12/11/2019 - 09:55 AM

Every year, the Christmas TV adverts leave us in puddles, with emotional short stories that never fail to tug on our delicate heart strings. But things are a little bit different in 2019, with inspiring stories, cute animations, and in some cases, a gritty interpretation of what is a traditionally a sugary holiday. So far, nine adverts have hit our screens. We've seen Aldi bring Kevin the Carrot back into our lives for more risky adventures, plus sweet stories of families and communities coming together (thanks to Very and Iceland), while Selfridges threw a huge fashion party underneath its Oxford Street store. And we can't wait to see what else comes out over the next few weeks.

It's official — there's no denying that Christmas is on its way. Watch all of the Christmas adverts that have been released so far this year before catching up on all ones that made us sob in 2018 [1].

Aldi Christmas Advert 2019

Aldi has brought back Kevin the Carrot for the fourth year running, and he's having even more adventures than usual. A riff on Peaky Blinders [2], Kevin finds himself in hot water with an angry gang of Brussels sprouts — brilliantly named the 'Left Blinders' — before taking centre stage at a Christmas show in the Big Top.

Selfridges Christmas Advert 2019

Selfridges brought out all the stops for its 2019 Christmas advert, titled Future Fantasy: a Christmas for Modern Times. Selfridges describes the short film as "a high-octane collision between the niche and the universal, and through a distinctly fashion lens." It is directed by Nabil Elderkin (who's previously collaborated with Travis Scott, Frank Ocean, and The Weeknd), narrated by Little Simz (of Top Boy [3]), and has a cast of unexpected yet influential people — think Dior Homme creative director Kim Jones, Dazed Media cofounder Jefferson Hack, and Cambridge Analytica whistle-blower Christopher Wiley.

Very.co.uk Christmas Advert 2019

Very's Christmas advert definitely left us misty-eyed. It's a sweet animation that tells the story of a community rallying together to give a lonely man, Sidney, a Christmas present and celebration.

Iceland Christmas Advert 2019

This year, Iceland has collaborated with Frozen to create a cute Christmas clip featuring all of your favourite characters ahead of the cinematic release of Frozen 2 [4] on Nov. 22.

Visa Christmas Advert 2019

Set to the catchy tune of Queen's "Somebody to Love", and starring 13 real shopkeepers from around the UK, Visa is inspiring us all to show our high streets some love this festive season with their advert.

Argos Christmas Advert 2019

When a dad spots the drum kit his daughter has circled in an Argos catalogue called "The Book of Dreams", his childhood dreams come alive. A drum kit materialises in his kitchen, which leads him and his daughter to perform "Don't You Forget About Me" on duelling drum kits to a huge crowd.

Asda Christmas Advert 2019

A young brother and sister duo run amok through their village, throwing literal Christmas magic around as they go until there are giant baubles rolling through the streets and people turning into gingerbread people left and right.

Dogs Trust Christmas Advert 2019

This year, the Dogs Trust is tackling the important message that a dog isn't just for Christmas but for life. In the advert, you'll see a very cute dog made of cork being celebrated and cooed over at the dinner table, before being discarded the next day with all the festive trash. We're not crying, you're crying!

Manchester City Council

Manchester City Council has released its own Christmas advert for 2019, and it's a supercute animated story of a young girl desperately trying to get her letter to Santa.
