Let's Set the Record Straight: Harry and Meghan Did Not Contribute to Finding Freedom

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are making headlines again following the release of Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand's book Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family. The buzzy book sheds light on everything from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's love story to their highly publicised exit from the royal family while dispelling rumours and misconceptions about the couple in between. The book is based on Scobie and Durand's personal experiences with the duo, as they were part of the lucky few who were able to witness the Sussexes' lives firsthand by attending hundreds of their engagements, work trips, and tours.
Despite recent reports, Harry and Meghan did not personally contribute to the book. While Finding Freedom does incorporate quotes from Harry and Meghan, the quotes were actually taken from previous interviews and appearances. "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not interviewed and did not contribute to Finding Freedom," a spokesperson for the couple told People. "This book is based on the authors' own experiences as members of the royal press corps and their own independent reporting." Per royal protocol, members of the British royal family are not officially allowed to authorise a biography.
Even though Harry and Meghan didn't contribute, some of the people closest to them did. Scobie and Durand spoke to 100 of the couple's friends, trusted aides, senior courtiers, and others in Harry and Meghan's inner circle. "The unique situation we had here was a lot of people in their lives felt that their friends or their colleagues that they knew were very different to those characters being described in the pages of the British tabloids, so they really wanted to speak up for them," Scobie recently told E!. "With friends like these, you find people who want to stick up for you."
