Walt Disney and Marvel's "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," as the name suggests, further leaps into the multiverse the MCU has been developing in its latest batch of titles, starting with the hit Disney+ series, "WandaVision." Released worldwide on May 6, the sequel to 2016's "Doctor Strange" has only had a theatrical premiere, in which it managed to set all sorts of box office records. On May 22, The Hollywood Reporter reported the long-awaited sequel collected upwards of $800 million at the global box office, coming in as the second-highest earning pandemic-era Hollywood movie, behind only "Spider-Man: No Way Home" ($1.89 billion). The second part in the Doctor Strange franchise also surpassed recent major studio projects in terms of global box office gross, including "No Time to Die" and "The Batman."

Now that "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" has been out for a month, fans are wondering if the Benedict Cumberbatch-led movie will be available to watch from the comfort of our sofas anytime soon. Here's everything you need to know about when the Doctor Strange sequel will be available to stream online.

What "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" Is About?

Dr. Stephen Strange's (Cumberbatch) recurrent vivid dreams turn out to be much more than innocuous subconscious visions when he one day runs into America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), the latest superhero addition to the MCU, whom he'd known from a parallel existence. America, who's on the run from a mysterious evil entity dead-set on stealing the superhuman strengths that allow her to travel inter-dimensionally, seeks Strange's help to put an end to the wicked chase. Strange, who then turns to Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), realises that the antagonist he's up against is none other than the Scarlet Witch, who's hoping to reunite with her boys in the parallel universe. More revelations await Strange as he goes on a multiverse traversing adventure along with America.

When Will "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" Be Available to Stream?

On June 2, Marvel Studios announced that "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" will finally be available to stream on Disney+ starting on Wednesday, June 22. A minimum 45-day theatrical run has preceded Marvel Studios' pandemic releases before they hit the streamer like "Eternals" and "Shang-Chi and The Legend Of The Ten Rings," putting "Doctor Strange 2"'s 47-day waiting period in the same window.

Many recent Disney productions, such as "Soul," "Luca," and "Turning Red" skipped theatrical releases and debuted exclusively on Disney+, mainly to accommodate the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Though Marvel Studio's 2021 release "Black Widow" was screened in theatres, it simultaneously became available to stream on Disney+. Its subsequent MCU motion pictures — "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and now "Doctor Strange" sequel — went straight for cinema, putting a gap between its theatrical and eventual streaming debut. Pixar's upcoming "Toy Story" spinoff "Lightyear" will also follow suit by not having a same-day release on Disney+.
