Headliner Frank Ocean Drops Out of Coachella's Second Weekend Due to Injury

The second weekend of Coachella 2023 will be missing one of its headliners. Representatives for Frank Ocean told TMZ in a statement on 19 April that "after suffering an injury to his leg on festival grounds in the week leading up to weekend one, Frank Ocean was unable to perform the intended show but was still intent on performing, and in 72 hours, the show was reworked out of necessity." Continued the statement, "On doctor's advice, Frank is not able to perform weekend two due to two fractures and a sprain in his left leg." His spot will be taken over by Blink-182 in weekend two, according to Variety. (Reps for Coachella did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR's request for comment and POPSUGAR was not able to reach Ocean's rep for comment.)

Prior to the announcement, social media was awash with conversation about Ocean's set during the festival's first weekend. According to reports from outlets, including Rolling Stone, Ocean's performance had started an hour late, and was deemed by many to be low-energy and marred by confusing stage performers. Rolling Stone had previously reported that a source said that Ocean's injury was the cause of set changes.

The famed music festival unveiled its highly anticipated headliners back in January. The trio of headlining artists was made up of Ocean, Bad Bunny, and K-pop girl group Blackpink. This year's performer roster includes dozens of other buzzy acts, including Rosalía, Gorillaz, Charli XCX, Burna Boy, Pusha T, Labrinth, Becky G, Latto, and many, many more.

The announcement came more than a year after Coachella confirmed Ocean as a future headliner. Ocean was originally scheduled to perform at the 2020 festival before the COVID-19 pandemic forced a cancelation. In a 2021 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Coachella cofounder Paul Tollett noted that he would normally never reveal the name of a performer so far in advance, but given the uncertainty of the pandemic, he said fans deserved hope for the future. "Right now, it's the Wild West," Tollett said. "I'm just trying to be as fair as I can to artists and to the fans to make sure that eventually, they get to see everyone that we talked about."

Ocean first performed at Coachella back in 2012, though his 2023 performance was his first time headlining the event.

Coachella's 2022 festival — its grand return after a two-year break, headlined by Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, and Swedish House Mafia — was filled with unforgettable moments. Good friends Styles and Shaina Twain performed a stellar duet together, while the former also brought Lizzo out on stage. Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion blew fans away by debuting her unapologetic single "Plan B." More surprises are sure to come when the festival returns this spring.
