Furiosa: All the Details We Have About the New Mad Max Movie

If you love the Mad Max movie series or need some more action in your life, get excited: Furiosa, the newest in the series, is in development! Furiosa will depict the backstory of the character Imperator Furiosa, who was played by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road. It's been five years since that film came out, so we're on the edge of our seats awaiting this next one. While Furiosa will keep to the Mad Max franchise in several ways, it will also have some differences. Here's all you need to know about the upcoming movie.

What Will Furiosa Be About?

Furiosa will centre around the title character's childhood home known as the "Green Place," a swampland. The movie will likely show the relationships she had with the Vuvalini warrior women who claim Furiosa, as well as how she was kidnapped from them. As a result of the kidnapping, Furiosa spent many years attempting to find her way back to the Green Place.

Is Furiosa a Prequel?

Yes! According to The Guardian, Furiosa is the prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, which was released in 2015. It will tell the backstory of Furiosa's character.

Who Is in the Furiosa Cast?

The trio of stars in Furiosa include Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa, Chris Hemsworth, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. You may have previously seen Taylor-Joy in The Queen's Gambit or Split, Hemsworth as Thor in the Avengers movies, and Abdul-Mateen II in Watchmen or Aquaman.

Why Isn’t Charlize Theron in Furiosa?

You may be disappointed to hear that Theron won't be playing Furiosa again, but it's because the Furiosa movie is a prequel and director George Miller wanted a young female actress in her 20s to play the role. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron said she's disappointed since she loved the role, but she respects Miller and wishes him the best.

When Will Furiosa Be Released?

The release date for Furiosa isn't clear, but Screen Rant believes production will start in 2021 due to coronavirus-based delays. Rotten Tomatoes also said that director George Miller plans to start filming in 2021 and release the movie in 2022 or 2023.

You can watch the 1979 Mad Max movie on Netflix or rent it on Amazon Prime for $4.
