BBC's Gavin and Stacey 2019 Christmas Special Trailer

The BBC Finally Shared the Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special Trailer, and I’m a Mess Ness!

Finally, we have our first look at the long-awaited Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special, and it did not disappoint. The one-minute trailer — which was released by BBC One on Saturday — takes us through the many Christmas emotions on Barry Island, thankfully without any plot spoilers.

The trailer opens with a classic musical number from Smithy (James Corden) and Gavin (Mathew Horne) and it's not long before Pam (Alison Steadman) and Mick (Larry Lamb) get involved with the dancing. Next up is a clip of Nessa (Ruth Jones) looking appropriately underwhelmed, while Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) frantically races around the kitchen to prepare Christmas dinner. But it's not long before the family are gathered together for a pint at the pub, where the festive excitement really kicks off.

Speaking with RadioTimes in November, James Corden — who not only plays one of the central characters, Smithy, but is also the cocreator and cowriter on the show along with Ruth Jones — admitted the Christmas special almost got binned altogether. "We'd written about 40 pages, and we sat and we read it . . . and we both went 'this just isn't good enough. It doesn't feel like the show. It doesn't feel like it's right,'" Corden said. Thankfully, after briefly considering he and Jones had been naïve in tackling the project again, they took a breath and created the "quickest scene we've ever written." He added, "And as soon as that scene was finished, we had no choice. We said, 'well now we have to make it.'"

All we know so far about the Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special is that we're in for a wild, hilarious ride back at Barry Island. After this little one-minute peek of the episode, we're so. damn. ready. The special will air on Dec. 25 (appropriate), on BBC One, but in the meantime, we won't judge you for watching the trailer over and over again until the new episode airs.
