I Just Want Someone to Look at Me the Way Harry Styles Looks at His Fish in "Adore You"

When I say it's a busy time in Harry Styles land, I'm seriously not joking. On Dec. 6, Styles dropped his latest song, "Adore You," from his second album Fine Line [1], but not just with a regular old music video. Nah, Styles came at us with a whole other world called Eroda and a short film about the place to accompany the song.

In the more-than-7-minute video narrated by singer Rosalia, Styles flexes his acting chops as a peculiar boy on a small island shaped like a frown. It's a cloudy, sad place that doesn't know what to make of this boy who wants to smile. The boy is forced to bottle up his emotions until he reaches the point where he can't go on. And as we watch Styles walk out into the ocean with rocks in his pocket, the voiceover says, "Loneliness is an ocean full of travellers trying to find their place in the world, but without friendship, we are all lost and left with no hope, no home, no harbour."

"Loneliness is an ocean full of travellers trying to find their place in the world, but without friendship, we are all lost and left with no hope, no home, no harbor."

But then! A fish! A peculiar jewel coat fish leaps from the water and bonds with the peculiar boy because they're both different. And this is where the video really just reels you in. Styles takes his fishy friend everywhere with him — in a coffee pot, in a clear backpack, in a fish tank on the back of his bike — and they quickly become the best of friends. Don't even get me started on the tiny taco he made for the fish and their little dance together.

But as the song plays on and Styles sings of just wanting to adore you, the fish grows too big, and Styles sets it free back into the ocean with its own kind. The townspeople, who always thought he was too peculiar to handle, band together to help him, and sun breaks through in Eroda for the first time.

I can appreciate the way Styles takes his songs and turns them on their head for his videos. Let's not forget the puppies and cupcakes in "Kiwi," [2] which had absolutely nothing to do with the song. Now we have "Adore You," which sounds very much like a love song ("Walk in your rainbow paradise / Strawberry lipstick state of mind / I get so lost inside your eyes / Would you believe it?"), but the video leans more toward an unexpected friendship and the story of hope.

If you're a Styles fan, you know how very Harry this short film truly is. It's unexpected, beautifully shot, and so very creative. I mean, he literally made a whole world called Eroda and sprinkled hints around the internet starting weeks ago. With a Twitter, an Instagram, a dedicated website, and more, Eroda seemed like it could be a real place. While the the internet frantically tried to figure out what it all could mean, the Eroda Twitter account [3] was just humming along tweeting at Styles's fans with little tidbits about the isle.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but he's done it again, you guys. Styles just keeps topping himself with everything he gives us, and as a fan, it's so exciting to see. I can only imagine what might come next, but in the meantime, I'll just be girding my loins for the release of Fine Line on Dec. 13!
