HBO Max is bringing Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's bestselling novel Americanah to the small screen, and the cast is already shaping up to be a stellar one. The adaptation was originally announced as a film starring Us star Lupita Nyong'o and David Oyelowo [1] back in 2014, but now Nyong'o and Black Panther [2] costar Danai Gurira are producing a 10-episode limited miniseries [3] airing on WarnerMedia's streaming service [4].

Americanah tells the epic story of Ifemelu, a teenager living in Nigeria who falls in love with her classmate Obinze. The two leave their homes to journey west, with Ifemelu heading to America and Obinze settling in London after failing to obtain an American visa. Ifemelu finds academic success in the US, but her life is plagued by the struggles of Black identity in America and failed love. On the other side of the ocean, Obinze lives the dangerous life of an undocumented resident in England and grapples with his desire to find prosperity.

Lupita Nyong'o as Ifemelu

Nyong'o stars as the film's protagonist, Ifemelu, a young woman who leaves her home in Nigeria to chase academic success in America. Despite her accomplishments, she's still drawn to the love she left behind and finds herself grappling with what it means to be Black for the first time.

Uzo Aduba as Aunty Uju

Orange Is the New Black [6]'s Aduba takes on the role of Aunty Uju, Ifemulu's bold young aunt who's more like Ifemulu's older sister. Like Ifemulu, Uju left Nigeria with her son for a better life in America where she became a doctor.

Zackary Momoh as Obinze

The Harriet star plays Obinze, Ifemulu's lost love who lives undocumented in London since he cannot make the journey to America.
