All the Hidden Easter Eggs in "Heartstopper" You Probably Missed

24/05/2023 - 02:11 PM

"Heartstopper" captured hearts across the world for its lighthearted and raw depiction of young love and exploration of sexuality when it dropped on Netflix back in April 2022. The coming-of-age drama [1] is set in southeast England, with the show following Charlie (Joe Locke), a high school student who recently came out — or, rather was forced to come out — as gay.

Charlie might know better than to crush on a straight guy, but the heart wants what it wants, and he soon finds himself falling for rugby player Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). Throughout the course of the series, viewers didn't just fall for the magnetism that is Charlie and Nick, but also with their friends. Alongside other LGBTQ+-positive TV series like "Ted Lasso" [2], and "The Last of Us" [3], "Heartstopper" put the spotlight on navigating school life as an LGBTQ+ teenager.

Based on the web comic by Alice Oseman of the same name, which was collected into a series of graphic novels, Oseman wrote all of the episodes for the first series, and we're already gearing up for season two of the series [4]. In a new video shared by the streaming platform on 24 April, 2023, the cast previewed the new season and announced the date it's going to premiere.

Ahead of the season 2 premiere where we'll undoubtedly be sinking our teeth into the future adventures of Charlie and Nick, we've delved into the many Easter Eggs that were littered throughout the first series. From hidden LGBTQ+ rainbows to the changing school badge, keep reading for all the special moments from "Heartstopper" so far.

Tara and Darcy's Kiss

When Tara and Darcy kiss during the series, Nick – who spots their sweet moment – is illuminated by the colours of the bisexual flag (pink, purple, and royal blue).

The Truham Grammar School Emblem

The series takes place in Truham Grammar High School, but did you notice the changing school logo? The 'T' on their school badge sits in front of a tree, but it changes according to the seasons. From bare branches to full leaves, perhaps the changing emblem reflects the multifaceted seasons of the character's lives?

Nick and Charlie's Train Journey

In episode 8 of the series, "Heartstopper" creator, Oseman, was actually sitting next to Nick and Charlie. The posters behind them are even the original artwork by the artist.

The Plastic Cacti in the Art Room

The plastic cacti in the art room of the "Heartstopper" school isn't just a modern touch on the ever-popular houseplant, it actually grows flowers as the series goes on to represent the character's blossoming. How cute!

Nick Asks Charlie to Join the Rugby Team

During Charlie's dream sequence, when he imagines Nick confessing his love for him (but in reality, he just asks him to be a reserve on their school rugby team), the rugby player's school emblem changes again. Instead of a tree, little love hearts are added to the badge.

The School's Wave Mural

The crashing wave mural, which appears on the Truham Grammar School's walls, actually foreshadows Nick and Charlie's trip to the beach in the series finale. The mural was also designed by – you guessed it – Oseman.

Charlie and Tao's Bedrooms

Despite their wildly different sense of personal style, Charlie and Tao's bedrooms are actually filmed in the same set – their windows are just different.

The Bowling Alley Scene

Whilst the gang are all hanging out at the bowling alley, Isaac is busy reading a copy of "Radio Silence", which is also by Oseman (we're seeing a bit of a theme, here).

Hidden Rainbows

The series has plenty of hidden rainbows, in the form of lens flares, throughout filming to celebrate all that is the wonderful LGBTQ+ community. We'll be keeping out eyes peeled for season 2 rainbows, for sure.

Elle's Sports Day Makeup

During their school sports day, Elle's makeup features "Heartstopper" comic-inspired doodles around her eyes.

The Art Room

The ever-important art room changes and develops throughout the series as the students create new projects.
