Prom and Pep Rallies Galore! Here Are 15 High School TV Shows on Amazon Prime

25/03/2021 - 03:35 AM

Every now and then, I miss high school [1]. I think about the sports, school spirit, the lack of responsibility I had, and my friends, and I get a little nostalgic. Then I remember the growing pains, the life lessons I had to learn, the homework, and I miss it all a little less. Still, there's something about the idea of high school in its best form that's always fun to look back on.

Whenever I get in this mood, I love to turn to TV shows set in high school [2]. I crave the pep rally and prom aesthetics, the first-love and coming-of-age tropes, the heartbreak, and the drama. Luckily, Amazon Prime has a huge selection of high school TV shows to satisfy my hunger. Whether you're in high school looking for something to relate to, or years past it looking for something to reminisce on, check out these 15 high school TV shows on Amazon Prime.

Teen Wolf

Set at Beacon Hills High School, I still remember being in ninth grade when I first watched Teen Wolf. Despite all of the life-threatening situations the characters found themselves in, I still wished my friends and I had supernatural abilities like everyone in the show. If you love werewolves and just the right amount of high school drama, you'll love Teen Wolf.

Glee

Love it or hate it, Glee is the high school musical-dramedy of our time. All six seasons are on Amazon Prime, so you can watch every high and low The New Directions faced. And let's be real, watching it now means so many great throwback songs from the early 2010s.

Awkward

Jenna Hamilton might be one of my favourite TV characters ever created. All five seasons of the show are available on Amazon Prime. Awkward is funny, relatable, and a must-see.

Dance Academy

Nothing reminds me that I can't dance quite like watching a show about people who can. This Australian television show was one of my favourites, mixing love, life, and cut-throat competition at the National Academy of Dance.

Sister, Sister

I have an older sister, and don't get me wrong I loved growing up with her, but is it a crime if Sister, Sister made me wish we were twins separated at birth who only found each other 14 years later? Tia and Tamara were my favourite on- and off-screen twins during my childhood.

The Boarding School: Las Cumbres

If you're a fan of Spanish drama shows, you'll love Las Cumbres. It's like The Umbrella Academy [8] meets Elite [9]. Fans of thrillers, mysteries, and isolated schools will love this one.

H2O: Just Add Water

H20: Just Add Water was iconic. I truly think I could have handled being a teenager better if I was a mermaid. Or maybe that would have added more complications, I don't know. Either way, I get to fantasize about what that might have been like every time I watch this show.

The Fosters

If you're a fan of Good Trouble, you have to go back and see where it all began. The Fosters begins when Callie and Jude Jacob join the Foster family as foster children. While it's not exclusively set in high school, most of the kids are teenagers, and quite a few of their storylines centre around school life.

Switched at Birth

Switched at Birth follows two teenage girls, Daphne Vasquez and Bay Kennish, who were, as the title implies, switched at birth. Similar to The Fosters, it's a family drama centreed around the two girls' lives, but don't worry, there's still plenty of high school content.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Nothing says girl power like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Before Edward and Bella, vampires had to be killed by a "chosen one." Enter Buffy Summers. If you haven't seen the show, you can catch up on the teen's high school and demon-slaying life with all seven seasons on Prime.

Alex Rider

Ever wonder what high school would be like if you were also a spy recruited by British secret intelligence after discovering your uncle's death wasn't an accident? You don't have to imagine too much when you can watch it all play out on Alex Rider. Growing up, I read the novels the series is based on, and the 2020 TV show did not disappoint.

Moesha

Moesha was another mid-90s TV icon. All five seasons are available on Amazon Prime, and while the show is over 20 years old, so many of the themes — race, sexuality, and gender to name a few — are still relevant today.

Saved by the Bell

Lucky for all of us, you can watch Saved by the Bell [17] for free on Amazon Prime if you're willing to also sit through a few ads. Personally, I think the compromise is worth it. I was too young to watch the show when it was airing, but I had a lot of fun catching up on it later. I can understand why it's a defining high school show. [18]

Chicken Girls

Chicken Girls is a Brat-produced series about a group of best friends navigating the typical teen experience: growing up, relationships, friendship, school, and dance. It can be a little cheesy, but isn't that part of the fun?

The Next Step

There's just something about dancing and teenagers that show creators can't seem to get enough of, but I'm not complaining. Set at The Next Step Dance Studio, this series has enough drama, friendship, competition, and choreography to keep you entertained for hours.
