No More Theories: How WandaVision Ends the Scarlet Witch's Story . . . For Now
The finale of WandaVision did what every Marvel movie has done before: it answered some questions and left others up in the air. After nine episodes of sitcom shtick, Easter eggs, and all the theories, we've finally come to the end of Wanda's journey — for now. Episode nine "The Series Finale," picks up exactly where we left off in episode eight, with Wanda and Agatha facing off as the older witch holds Billy and Tommy captive by their necks.
Wanda releases her children by blasting Agatha with her magic, but when she tries it again Agatha catches and absorbs it. "I take power from the undeserving," she tells the younger witch. "It's kinda my thing." As Agatha explains, Wanda is a magical being of great power, but it comes with the price of destined destruction. The Scarlet Witch is fated to end the world and Wanda's unintentional Hex over Westview is an indication of how easily she could do such a thing. But Wanda is adamant that she's not the chaos witch that Agatha is referring to, and the two engage in a battle that briefly ends when Agatha is thrown into a nearby house and disappears in a clever Wizard of Oz nod. When Wanda turns to locate her, she's ambushed by S.W.O.R.D's Vision, who takes a tender moment to begin squeezing her head like a peach.
Westview Vision flies to her rescue, and the two kick off the fan-theorized Vision vs. Vision battle as Agatha reappears and draws Wanda away. We then see Monica, who is trapped in an attic with Evan Peters's Fietro, banging at the window and trying to get Wanda's attention. When she tries to run off, the speedster knocks her back, keeping her from escaping. Later in the episode, Monica finds a headshot that reveals Fiestro's real name is Ralph Bohner and he's under Agatha's control, not Wanda's. She knocks him down and rips his necklace off, snapping him out of Agatha's trance, which allows her to run off.
Meanwhile, Jimmy is brought back to S.W.O.R.D.'s base, where he leads Hayward into monologuing as he slyly sneaks a nearby cellphone into his cuffed hands. Hayward explains that he plans to kill Wanda and allow people to think their Vision is the one he pretended Wanda kidnapped. Jimmy gets tossed into a barn alone, where he pops his cuffs and calls the FBI for backup.
Back in downtown Westview, Agatha talks about how the Scarlet Witch has an entire chapter in "the book of the damned," aka The Darkhold. She explains that Wanda has greater power than the Sorcerer Supreme and is ultimately fated to bring down great destruction. To prove her point, she begins taking the mind control off the Westview residents and Wanda is suddenly surrounded by the people who have been under her control this whole time. Dottie tearfully asks Wanda to let her daughter "out of her room," which also answers where the children of the town have been throughout the ordeal. Distressed by the people's cries, Wanda allows Agatha to goad her into bringing down the Hex and letting everyone free. But as she begins to do so, Vision and the boys — all on their way to her — begin disintegrating.
Agatha explains that since the three are creations of the Hex, they cannot survive without it. Wanda reluctantly closes the Hex back up, just as S.W.O.R.D. agents arrive at the town square and the other Vision swoops in to take his "twin" away in another round. "Boys, handle the military — Mommy will be right back," is an actual line then said by Wanda Maximoff.
The Visions fly into the library where Westview Vision uses the Ship of Theseus (I did not take a single philosophy class in college, so you'll have to Google that) to get through to S.W.O.R.D. Vision and explain that the latter is being used as a weapon by the agency. He bestows Vision with his memories by tapping into his circuitry, which snaps him out of his roboticness. S.W.O.R.D Vision says, "I am Vision," and flies up through the skylight, seemingly leaving the Hex entirely.
Back in the town square, Wanda tells the boys to "handle the military" as she handles Agatha. Billy freezes the soldiers with magic to keep them from shooting the boys, while Tommy zips around, taking their weapons. Hayward, having been in a car this whole time, grabs a handgun and starts firing at the boys. Monica uses her powers for the first time to protect them, stepping in front of his shots and allowing the bullets to fly through her body as she absorbs their kinetic energy. Hayward gets back into the car, but before he can get away, he's slammed from the side by Darcy in the funnel cake van.
As Vision reunites with his sons, joining them with Monica in the square, Wanda appears behind Agatha on a nearby rooftop where she pulls her Age of Ultron trick and takes them into Agatha's mind. They appear back in 17th-century Salem, where Agatha killed her coven, and Wanda attempts to torture the witch with the resurrected bodies of her coven. But Agatha is hip to her tricks and turns the tables on Wanda, getting the zombies to swarm her as they cry, "You are the Scarlet Witch, harbinger of chaos." Agatha tells Wanda that power isn't her problem, "it's knowledge." (She's not wrong.) As a crown appears on Wanda's head, Agatha presents Wanda with the choice: save everyone inside the Hex and lose her family, or give Agatha her magic and the older witch will perfect her Hex so she can keep her magical family.
Wanda launches them into reality and begins throwing her magic at Agatha, seemingly giving the witch her powers. But when Agatha attempts to use them against her, Wanda reveals it was all a trick to buy her time to forge runes into the Hex, preventing Agatha from using any magic. They're the same runes Agatha used on Wanda in episode eight; the older witch is teaching her already! Wanda even thanks her for the lesson, slyly referring to the pair's mentor-mentee relationship in the comics. Wanda draws all her magic back from Agatha, accepting her rightful mantle and finally manifesting into the Scarlet Witch. After defeating Agatha, Wanda turns her back into Agnes as punishment, rendering her into the nosy neighbour for as long as she desires. When the older witch points out that Wanda will need her someday, the Scarlet Witch smugly tells her that she'll know where to find her.
Wanda finally brings down the Hex, which takes Vision and the twins with it. As she says goodbye to her husband (again), Wanda reveals that she created Vision with the bit of the Mind Stone that lived within her. When Vision asks what he is, Wanda tells him he is "my sadness and my hope. But mostly, you're my love." (It was at this point, dear reader, I was sobbing uncontrollably.)
With the Hex done, Wanda finds herself amid the unfinished foundation for her and Vision's home in Westview. She walks to the town square with the resentful looks from residents trailing behind her as she walks up to Monica. The other woman tells the witch that she doesn't hate her, but that if she found herself in the same situation, she would bring her mother back. Nonetheless, Wanda says she's sorry, promising that although she doesn't understand her power, she will someday. As the FBI and police officers arrive, Wanda turns into the Scarlet Witch and flies away out of sight.
