ITV made the announcement on Monday, 4 May, that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Love Island season seven will not be taking place as planned for Summer 2020. The season has instead been postponed until the summer of 2021, when travel bans and lockdown restrictions are lifted.

"We have tried every which way to make Love Island this summer but logistically it's just not possible to produce it in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved and that for us is the priority." Kevin Lygo, director of television at ITV, said in a statement.

In typical circumstances, the Love Island TV crew would have been heading out to Mallorca to begin preparation for filming to begin. However, with the UK on lockdown and it still being unclear when these restrictions will be lifted, this is out of the question right now. "This is a shame but ultimately the right and safe decision for all involved ❤️," said Dr Alex George, former Love Island contestant and NHS doctor, on the show's Instagram post announcing the news.

"We are very sorry for fans of the show but making it safely is our prime concern and Love Island will be back stronger than ever in 2021," Lygo said.
