JAY-Z [2] once rapped "numbers don't lie, check the scoreboard", and now he's the most Grammy-nominated [3] artist in history! Talk about manifestation. The Brooklyn rapper received three nominations [4] on Tuesday, including album of the year for his work on Kanye West [5]'s Donda and two in the best rap song category for his features on DMX's "Bath Salts" and West's "Jail". The nods bring him up to a total of 83 Grammy nominations, surpassing Quincy Jones who he was originally tied with at 80. If he takes home another award at the 2022 awards, his daughter, Blue Ivy [6], has a new cup to sip from [7]!
JAY-Z has a long and complex relationship with the Grammys. In 2009, 2010, and 2012, he took home three awards. However, in 2018, he received eight nominations for the album 4:44 and didn't take home any awards. That snub made its way into his song "Apesh*t" with his wife, Beyoncé [8], as he rapped, "Tell the Grammys f*ck that 0 for 8 sh*t / Have you ever seen the crowd goin' apesh*t?" Win or lose at the 2022 ceremony, JAY-Z is cemented in history.
