Joe Jonas Somehow Makes Smash Mouth's "All Star" Sound Sophisticated
Some singers prepare for performances by humming, deep breathing, or reviewing their lyrics, but Joe Jonas, on the other hand, has quite the unconventional ritual. During a "Tonight Show" appearance on 23 March, the 32-year-old star told host Jimmy Fallon all about his pre-show warmup routine: singing a theatrical rendition of Smash Mouth's famed 1999 hit "All Star." "I find it really warms my vocals up and gets me in the right mindset," the middle Jonas brother explained. Of course, Fallon then magically located a microphone so he could treat the studio audience to his rendition of the iconic song, and a treat it was indeed.
With instrumental accompaniment by The Roots, Jonas started from the top, dramatically crooning the lyrics countless others have belted out at karaoke: "Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me. I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed." He then rose to his feet and sauntered over to the stage to sing all the way through the chorus, giving us flashbacks to Hugh Jackman's performances in "The Greatest Showman."
Jonas's one-of-a-kind cover wound up catching Smash Mouth's attention on Twitter; the band members replied to a "Tonight Show" video, saying, "it dont stop," as a reference to the prechorus lyrics about how "the years start comin' and they don't stop comin'." Plus, they reposted the clip with the hashtag "#JoeStar," so it's clear Jonas's version earned their seal of approval.
Earlier on during his late-night appearance, the soon-to-be father of two discussed his and his brothers' upcoming Las Vegas residency, getting married to Sophie Turner by an Elvis impersonator, and his recent partnership with the "Bridgerton" cast.
