Lizzo Says Beyoncé's Music Helped Her Through Getting "Picked On" in New Carpool Karaoke
Beyoncé's healing powers also work on fellow celebrities. Lizzo appeared in the newest edition of "The Late Late Show"'s popular segment Carpool Karaoke, singing through her hits — and one of Queen Bey's — with James Corden.
Lizzo kicked off the clip singing along to her 2016 track "Good as Hell," admitting to Corden, "This is so cool . . . that people know my music well enough that I can do this." During their drive, the superstar — who showed off her flute skills — spoke about some of her personal influences, including Beyoncé. "When I was shy, or I, you know, didn't think I was cool and when I was getting picked on, I would listen to Beyoncé in my bedroom and it would transport me," she explained. "I would feel something, I would feel like this — my life is gonna be better, you know? There's hope for me."
In fact, Lizzo said that after dropping out of college at the University of Houston, she was "really depressed" and turned to Beyoncé's 2006 album "B' Day." Recounted Lizzo, "I would just sing 'B' Day' all the time," noting she realised, "I wanna be a singer." She added of Beyoncé, "The way she makes people feel, that's how I want to make people feel with music. She's been my North Star."
Corden then couldn't help but play a cruel prank on Lizzo, who said she's never met the iconic performer, teasing that he was going to call up the "Break My Soul" singer. After getting Lizzo's hopes up, he admitted, laughing, "I'm joking there's no way I've got [Beyoncé's] phone number." Despite not being able to include the songstress in their sing-a-long, the pair did jam out to one of her early hits: "Crazy in Love."
Both Lizzo and Beyoncé have new albums coming out in July: the former's, "Special," is due out July 15, while the latter's, named "Renaissance," is coming July 29.
