Lizzo Whips Out Her Flute For a Sultry Cover of Sam Smith's "Unholy"

The "Unholy" hype train is showing no signs of slowing down. Lizzo sang the chart-topping Sam Smith and Kim Petras track in the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge on 14 Feb., putting her own jazzy twist on the sexy song. Repping designs from Yitty's new denim collection, she started out solely accompanied by heavy bass before drums and backup singers joined in. After crooning the first few verses, Lizzo brought out a special guest, Sasha Flute (yes, she named her flute) for an unexpected solo interlude, followed by some soulful sing-shouting.

"Unholy" was an instant hit even before Smith and Petras officially released it in the fall, going viral on TikTok and inspiring a seductive dance challenge on the app. The song recently won the best pop duo/group performance award at the Grammys, where Smith and Petras also performed it during the ceremony.

The Live Lounge has been the site of many unexpected music covers throughout the years. Standouts include Paramore's rendition of Drake's"Passionfruit," Lil Nas X's version of Dolly Parton's "Jolene," and Ed Sheeran's take on Christina Aguilera's "Dirrty." Lizzo has dropped by the London radio station studio on numerous occasions in the past, covering BTS's "Butter," Harry Styles's "Adore You," and Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson's "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart," in addition to plenty of her own hits, from "Juice" and "Good as Hell" to "Rumours" and "Cuz I Love You."
