Love in the Time of Corona: How the Couples on the Show Are Connected in Real Life

25/08/2020 - 12:20 AM

A majority of TV networks have had to halt production [1] due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Freeform got creative with their latest project, Love in the Time of Corona. The four-episode limited series — which is now available to stream on Hulu [2] — debuted over two nights on Aug. 22 and Aug 23 and showcases the relatable struggles people who are looking for "love, sex, and connection" are currently facing while social distancing. It focuses on the storylines of four couples, and production took place in the cast's very own homes using remote technology [3]. Because of this, the stars had to film with the people that were already around them, such as their friends or significant others. Ahead, see how three of the couples on the show are connected in real life.

Gil Bellows and Rya Kihlstedt: Married

Bellows (Paul) and Kihlstedt (Sarah) play a separated couple who are stuck quarantining together after their daughter (Sophie) comes home from college. While they may not be together on the show, in real life, they're happily married. The two tied the knot in October 1994 and have two kids together, 21-year-old Ava and 18-year-old Giovanni. And —— you guessed it — Ava stars as Sophie in the limited series, marking her first official acting role [5].

Tommy Dorfman and Rainey Qualley: Friends

Just like Elle and Oscar, Qualley and Dorfman are also pals [6] in real life. In fact, they used Dorfman's home to shoot all of their scenes. "I love working with Tommy, he's so talented and just one of my best friends," Qualley told Brief Take in an interview. "Tommy has been one of my good friends, and playing best friends with him came pretty naturally. It was fun too because we were able to improvise and play with each other."

Leslie Odom Jr. and Nicolette Robinson: Married

The second real-life couple on the show are Odom Jr. and Robinson [7]. The pair first met in 2008 when they worked together on the production of Once on This Island, and eventually, they tied the knot in December 2012. Five years later, they welcomed a daughter named Lucille in April 2017.

"We just couldn't pass up the opportunity to make some art about this time. I mean, it's how we process trauma and grief and even joy," Odom Jr. told the Today show [8]. "We were really grateful to have something to work on right now."
