Zendaya and John David Washington Battle Their Relationship Woes in Malcolm & Marie Trailer

"This isn't a love story but a story about love."

If you're looking for a sweet romantic comedy, you won't find it in Malcolm & Marie. The black-and-white film follows a director (John David Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) whose relationship is tested after they return home from the premiere of his latest project and await the critical response to it. In the almost three-minute trailer, the two struggle over a battle of wills as they clash over an unspoken transgression on Malcolm's part, which Marie cannot get over. Malcolm laments that Marie's past prevents her from truly believing he loves her. "I feel like once you know someone's there for you and once you know they love you, you never actually think of them again," Marie claims in the preview. "It's not until you're about to lose something that you actually start paying attention."

We're getting anxious just thinking about what's hidden between the lines! Zendaya teamed up with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, who wrote, directed, and produced the black-and-white film, to ensure their summer shoot at Feldman Architecture's Caterpillar House in Carmel, CA, was fully compliant with WGA, DGA, and SAG-AFTRA approvals and COVID-19 safety protocols. The film is set to premiere on Netflix on 5 Feb., with the streamer planning to wage a "full-fledged Oscar campaign" for it. We cannot wait to see the romantic reckoning that's in store!
