We're gearing up for the season two premiere [1] of The Mandalorian [2], which makes it the perfect time to revisit what happened at the end of season one. The trailer makes it look like Baby Yoda and the Mandalorian will be travelling [3] through the galaxy during the new season, so how did they end up sticking together and on a mission?

Baby Yoda, aka "the Child," has a bit of a rough meeting with the Mandalorian at the beginning of the season [4]. Din Djarin [5] is one of, apparently, multiple bounty hunters sent out by the Client to capture the Child and bring him in for nefarious purposes [6]. Upon discovering that his bounty is, basically, a toddler, Djarin slowly has a change of heart and ends up rescuing Baby Yoda and going on the run with him. Things get even more dangerous when it's revealed that Moff Gideon, a former Imperial leader [7], is actually after them, and he's not planning on stopping until he captures the Child, who's demonstrating Force abilities such as healing and movement.

In the first season finale, Djarin and the Child encounter the Armorer again, now the sole survivor of the band of underground Mandalorians [8] we met across the season. When she meets the Child, she recognises him as a Jedi, noting that, historically, the Mandalorians and the Jedi were often enemies [9]. In their conversation, she reminded him that, as part of the creed of Mandalorians, he is essentially the Child's father and guardian until the Child grows up or he can be reunited with his own kind.

Following an intense battle to get away from Moff Gideon's forces — one that costs the life of droid IG-11, who sacrifices himself to take down stormtroopers and clear a path for Djarin and the Child — they're able to escape and reunite with their allies, Cara Dune and Greef Karga. The end of the season sees the friends parting ways: Cara and Greef head off to resume bounty hunting, while the Mandalorian and the Child take off elsewhere, presumably to somewhere they can hide out and start looking for the remnants of Baby Yoda's people [10]. Whether that means more of his species or just more Jedi in general is one of the many questions that we have leading up to the Oct. 30 premiere of season two [11]!
