The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Is Coming Back For Season 4 — Here's What We Know

30/06/2021 - 04:55 PM

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel [1] will soon be back for its fourth season, and we can't wait! After a gap year in 2020 due to filming delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon's acclaimed comedy [2] is set to return to our screens later this year, packed with all the humour (and incredible retro fashion [3]!) we've come to love. It's still at least a few months until season four graces us with its presence, but that doesn't mean we're completely in the dark about what's next for Midge and company. We're breaking down everything we know so far about what to expect in the new season, who's returning and who's joining the cast, and more — keep reading for our complete guide!

When Will The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 Premiere?

There's still no premiere date for the next season of Maisel, but we can make an educated guess at least! All three previous seasons have debuted in late November or early December, so it seems reasonable to assume that the upcoming season will follow the same pattern.

Who's Returning For The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4?

According to a Deadline report when production began in January 2021, the entire main cast will be back [4] for season four. That includes Rachel Brosnahan as Midge Maisel, Tony Shalhoub as Abe Weissman, Marin Hinkle as Rose Weissman, Alex Borstein as Susie Myerson, Michael Zegen as Joel Maisel, Stephanie Hsu as Mei Lin, and Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce.

What Will The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 Be About?

Amazon hasn't officially revealed any details about the plot of the new season, but judging by where we left everyone at the end of the last season, there's a lot of changes coming our way. Season three ended with Midge's comedy career in limbo after being kicked off Shy Baldwin's tour for accidentally almost outing him during a set.

Midge's love life has taken a few turns, too. Her ex-husband, Joel, has found new love with medical student Mei, while Benjamin reappeared to vent his frustrations about her sudden breaking of their engagement, and a chemistry-laden night out with Lenny ended with Midge deciding not to cross that line [5] with one of her best friends.

Both Midge and Susie are in dire financial straits now, with the tour abruptly ended. Susie is in trouble with gambling debts and no incoming money to pay them, while Midge had just bought her old apartment back from Moishe with the promise of her tour income to make payments. Presumably, season four will address all these dangling plot lines and more, like Abe's pivot from buttoned-up mathematics professor to would-be activist.

Who's Joining the Cast For The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4?

The cast is expanding significantly with a number of new members for season four, although the details of most of these characters — even names — are being kept under wraps. In April, Deadline reported that Reid Scott and Gideon Glick will appear [6] in multi-episode arcs and later shared the news that Brosnahan's real-life husband, Jason Ralph, will also have a role [7]. As recently as June, more casting news came down the pipeline, with word that Jackie Hoffman and Allison Guinn will both have recurring roles in the new season [8].

The biggest news for fans of Amy Sherman-Palladino's shows, though, is that Milo Ventimiglia [9] is reuniting with his former Gilmore Girls [10] showrunner in a guest role [11] that — you guessed it — is still a mystery. The reunion has been in the making for years. Way back in 2018, during a reunion interview with Variety, Sherman-Palladino revealed her intention to bring Ventimiglia to Maisel [12]: "It's got to be the right part. It can't be just a cameo. It's got to have some meat to it. And it's also got to be a time when he can shave and cut his hair into a 1950s-period look. But the reuniting will definitely happen."

And Ventimiglia isn't the only Gilmore Girls alum that will be joining the show this season. Kelly Bishop, who's best known for her role as matriarch Emily Gilmore, was confirmed to be joining the Maisel cast [13] in an official Instagram post on 29 June. Though we don't yet know who exactly Bishop will be playing, it's clear that her Maisel character shares the same impeccable fashion sense and no-nonsense side-eye as Emily Gilmore.

In October 2020, Sherman-Palladino also confirmed that one existing guest star will be getting more screen time in season four: Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce. "We never intended for Lenny to be as important as he is," Sherman-Palladino explained from the Woodstock Film Festival, as reported by TVLine. "He's only been in [a couple] episodes a season. It's weird because he's such a presence. He's going to be in a little bit more [14] [in season four], which is great."
