Hollywood is full of films about slavery, segregation, and the Black struggle, and while these films can serve as important educational tools — especially during Black History Month — it is important to step back and remember that films about trauma are not the end-all-be-all of Black entertainment. Black people deserve to see depictions of happy-go-lucky romances, cultural explorations, and cheesy coming-of-age movies too. So if you're looking for a way to ring in Black History Month or simply for a film about Black joy in its purest form, read books by Black authors, follow Black influencers, and check out this list of amazing Black films, minus the trauma.
