The new full-length trailer for Netflix's "Matilda the Musical" is here, and it features Emma Thompson [1], Lashana Lynch, and the young Alisha Weir stepping into the iconic roles of Miss Trunchbull, Miss Honey, and Matilda — but this time, with music! The trailer, which was released on 13 Oct. and clocks in at just over two minutes, gives a sneak peek at a few of the youthful songs that will keep you hooked throughout the film.
The musical — and 1996 cult-classic film — is based on Roald Dahl's story about the titular 5-year-old, who uses her powers of telekinesis to overcome bullies, including her parents and her school's headmistress. The film will be helmed by Matthew Warchus, who also directed the stage musical. Original playwright Dennis Kelly will adapt the screenplay, with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. The film will get a cinema release in the UK through Sony Pictures in November, with Netflix distributing it in summer 2023.
Lashana Lynch, who played Nomi [2] in "No Time To Die," will play Ms. Honey. The beloved teacher, who is one of the few to encourage Matilda and her powerful gifts, was famously played by Embeth Davidtz in the feature film adaptation.

It was first revealed that Lynch will portray Miss Honey in the film, followed by the 15 Jan. confirmation that Thompson will play formidable headteacher Miss Trunchbull.
Academy Award winner Ralph Fiennes [3] was originally in talks for the part, as the character of Trunchbull is actually played by a man in theater productions of "Matilda the Musical." However, Netflix's movie musical landed on Thompson for the role. "We haven't had to build the appearance of Trunchbull as a woman before!" director Matthew Warchus told the Daily Mail [4].
"Matilda the Musical" also stars Weir as Matilda Wormwood. Andrea Riseborough and Stephen Graham will play Mrs. and Mr. Wormwood, respectively.

Based on the book by Roald Dahl, "Matilda the Musical" follows a young girl with telekinetic powers and a great love for reading. She attends a school run by an abusive headmistress called Miss Trunchbull but finds that she can use her powers to fight back against both Miss Trunchbull and her cruel parents. She winds up developing a close bond with a kind teacher named Miss Honey.

"Matilda the Musical" will be released by Sony Pictures in cinemas on 25 November 2022. It will be then distributed by Netflix next summer.
