These 15 Netflix Original Christmas Movies Should Be Required Watching This Season

12/11/2019 - 06:10 PM

To be clear, we see no problem with watching Love Actually on repeat all December long (or all year long, really). However, you should know that Netflix has a lot more original holiday movies [1] than you might realise. Whether you're looking for something family-friendly or decidedly for adults, Netflix has Christmas-centric movie offerings for everyone, and if you've already watched Elf more times than you can count, you might want to give one of these Netflix originals a chance. From romance to comedy to cartoons, here are all of the Netflix original Christmas movies [2] you can stream this holiday season.

Holiday in the Wild

Starring Rob Lowe [4] and Kristin Davis, this holiday rom-com tells the story of a woman who — abandoned by her husband the night before they're set to leave on an African safari — decides to travel to Cape Town alone, where she meets a superhot elephant conservationist. Think Eat Pray Love, but with less eating and praying and more Christmas cheer.

Let It Snow

Based on the YA novel of the same name by Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle, this holiday-themed romantic comedy tells the story of an epic snowstorm in a quiet Midwestern town and the even more epic party that unfolds at a local Waffle Town, changing the lives of the town's high school seniors forever. Oh, and did we mention that the cast is absolutely stacked [6]?

Angela's Christmas

Set in Ireland in the 1910s, this adorable animated tale follows a doe-eyed young girl on her journey to bring warmth and happiness to everyone on Christmas. The result: a movie so poignant and pure that you don't even need to watch it with kids to love it.

The Christmas Chronicles

This holiday caper follows brother-and-sister team Kate and Teddy Pierce as they devise a Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus, starring Darby Camp (otherwise known as Chloe Mackenzie from Big Little Lies) and The Babysitter's Judah Lewis. Also, who knew that Kurt Russell would make for such a perfect Santa Claus?

Christmas Inheritance

Starring The 100's Eliza Taylor, this cheesy rom-com tells the story of an heiress who must deliver a Christmas card to her dad's former partner before she can claim her inheritance, a task that becomes complicated when a freak snowstorm leaves her stranded at an inn with the charming owner. You can probably guess what happens next.

A Christmas Prince

Before Meghan Markle [11] and Prince Harry's love story became the best modern fairy tale of our time, this feel-good romance (starring Ben Lamb and Rose McIver) gave us the story of an ambitious reporter who goes undercover to get the scoop on Aldovia's playboy prince, only to find herself falling in love instead. Lame? Yes — but still wonderful.

A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding

This sequel to A Christmas Prince follows Amber through her ups and downs of the days leading up to her wedding with Prince Richard, as she learns that being the future Aldovian queen is not all it's cracked up to be. If you believe there's no such thing as too much cheese, then this supercheesy (and utterly implausible [13]) flick is definitely for you.

El Camino Christmas

This absurd romp (starring Dax Shepherd, Tim Allen, and Jessica Alba [15]) follows five strangers who find themselves barricaded inside of a liquor store during a supposed robbery on Christmas Eve. If that doesn't sound like a typical Christmas movie to you, you're right — but the result is still pretty fun.

The Holiday Calendar

This Christmas comedy stars The Vampire Diaries alum Kat Graham as an aspiring photographer who inherits an ancient Advent calendar from her grandmother that may actually be able to tell her future — as well as guide her toward a new love interest (played by Quincy Brown). Now that's the kind of gift we want to get from our grandmas!

The Princess Switch

Another Christmastime rom-com, this movie stars Vanessa Hudgens [18] in the dual roles of a baker and a duchess who discover their uncanny resemblance and hatch a plan to swap places. It may not be totally original, but if you don't think "Bring the Snow" is a total bop [19], then you need to explain yourself.

A Very Murray Christmas

In this Netflix comedy special from director Sofia Coppola, Bill Murray [21] enlists a handful of celebrities (including George Clooney [22], Miley Cyrus [23], and more) to help him celebrate the holidays. Nothing cures the holiday blues like a bunch of famous friends and a few musical numbers, right?

Klaus

This animated film — which marks the directorial debut for Sergio Pablos, cocreator of Despicable Me — tells the story of a desperate young postman whose unlikely friendship with a reclusive toymaker leads to the invention of Santa Claus. Voice actors include Jason Schwartzman, Rashida Jones, J.K. Simmons, and Joan Cusack, so you're sure to recognise plenty of character voices.

The Knight Before Christmas

The Princess Switch [26] star Vanessa Hudgens [27] is back for another Netflix original Christmas romance, this time playing a good-natured but disillusioned science teacher who meets a cursed medieval knight at the mall. She then makes it her mission to help return him to his time — though the longer he stays, the more Sir Cole wonders if he even wants to go back.

Holiday Rush

In this sweet holiday flick, a popular radio DJ unexpectedly loses his job and must move in with his aunt to get back on his feet — though his four spoiled children still expect him to fulfil all the demands on their pricy Christmas wish lists. Who's ready to learn the true meaning of Christmas?

When it's available: Nov. 28 [29]

A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby

In the third Christmas Prince movie instalment, Rose McIver and Ben Lamb will return as Amber and Prince Richard, only this time they'll be welcoming a new addition to their family. You know what they say: first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes . . . well, you know.
