8 Brand-New Netflix Movies Comin' at Us Throughout December

03/12/2019 - 11:30 AM

Netflix is the gift that keeps on giving, and in December, the streaming service is gifting us eight new original movies to round out 2019. This month, you can expect to see Ryan Reynold's highly-anticipated Netflix debut [1], Netflix's first original movie from the Philippines, the third instalment in the Christmas Prince trilogy [2], and five more movies perfect for holiday binge-watching. Though it's hard to imagine watching anything other than all of the incredible holiday movies available to watch on Netflix [3] (including Netflix's many holiday originals [4]), we think these eight latest movies are worth taking a break from your Christmas movie marathon.

Dead Kids

Netflix's first-ever Philippine-made original is a crime thriller based on a true story, revolving around a social awkward teen who gangs up with some fellow misfits after he learns that they plan to kidnap an obnoxious (but very wealthy) classmate and hold him for ransom.

When it's available: Dec. 1 [6]

Let's Dance

This drama is basically the French version of Step Up and Save the Last Dance [7], following the love story that unfolds between a hip-hop dancer and an aspiring ballerina after the former takes a job teaching at a top ballet academy in Paris.

When it's available: Dec. 4 [8]

A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby

In the third Christmas Prince movie instalment, Rose McIver and Ben Lamb will return as Amber and Prince Richard, only this time they'll be welcoming a new addition to their family. You know what they say: first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes . . . well, you know.

When it's available: Dec. 5 [9]

Marriage Story

This highly-anticipated dramedy stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson [10] as a New York City theatre director and his wife, a former teen actresses turned stage performer. Charlie and Nicole's already-rocky marriages comes apart after Nicole accepts a starring role in a TV pilot and moves to Los Angeles with their son, and the movie follows the subsequent unraveling of their life together.

When it's available: Dec. 6
[11]

6 Underground

Said to be Netflix's most expensive movie to date [12], this Michael Bay-directed film (written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the creators of the Deadpool franchise) stars Ryan Reynolds [13] and tells the story of six billionaires who fake their own deaths to form an elite team of underground crime fighters.

When it's available: Dec. 13 [14]

The Two Popes

Based on Anthony McCarten's 2017 play The Pope, this biographical dramedy stars Anthony Hopkins [15] and Jonathan Pryce as conservative Pope Benedict XVI and liberal Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (i.e. the future Pope Francis), centring on their relationship as they attempt to forge a new path for the Catholic Church together, despite their wildly different opinions.

When it's available: Dec. 20 [16]

Como caído del cielo

This magical realist rom-com from Mexico isn't quite your typical biopic. Though centred on real-life Mexican film and music icon Pedro Infante, this movie tells the story of an Infante stuck in limbo between earth and heaven after dying due to his womanising ways, and when he begs for another chance to make amends, he gets that chance — though he must do it through the body of an impersonator.

When it's available: Dec. 24 [17]

The App

In this Black Mirror-esque thriller, an actor and industrial heir heads to Rome to shoot his very first movie, but while he's there, he starts using a dating app, and that habit gradually develops into a self-destructive obsession.

When it's available: Dec. 26
