Just a Casual Roundup of 50 New Original TV Shows Coming to Netflix in 2020

Netflix gifted us with so many great new series in 2019 [1] that it almost feels greedy to expect more. In 2019, we saw the premiere of Sex Education, Unbelievable, The Politician, Russian Doll, and so much more, but Netflix isn't done churning out amazing content. The upcoming year is providing even more incredible new shows [2], including a Big Mouth spinoff, a Mindy Kaling original, two shows from Shonda Rhimes, and two more shows from Ryan Murphy, and we can barely contain our excitement. With dramas, comedies, and adaptations galore, here are all the new shows everyone will be talking about in 2020.

Dracula

Based on the classic novel of the same name by Bram Stoker, this BBC One and Netflix production comes from Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, the same brains behind Sherlock and Doctor Who. Claes Bang stars as the title character, and the three-episode miniseries will follow Dracula from his origins in Eastern Europe through his battles with Van Helsing's descendant.

Messiah

This suspenseful thriller tells the story of a present-day Jesus in the form of a man in the Middle East (played by Mehdi Dehbi) who appears to be performing miracles, as well as the reaction that follows. Mission: Impossible's Michelle Monaghan and French comedian Tomer Sisley also appear in the series.

Spinning Out

Starring Kaya Scodelario (whom you might know better as Effy Stonem from Skins) and January Jones [6], this drama revolves around a competitive ice skater who — after making a devastating fall during a competition — attempts to make a comeback by teaming up with a new partner.

The Circle

This reality competition series places a group of strangers in the same apartment building (but different apartments), and without ever meeting, the contestants will communicate solely through social media and decide who has cultivated the best online persona.

Thieves of the Wood

Set in 18th-century Belgium, this historical drama series follows the real-life story of the charming Flemish highwayman Jan de Lichte, who led a revolt against the aristocracy during the Austrian occupation.

AJ and the Queen

RuPaul stars in this comedy as Ruby Red, a drag queen who's fallen on bad times, compelling her to go on a cross-country road trip in a run-down RV alongside an 11-year-old orphan stowaway named AJ.

Medical Police

In this offshoot of Rob Corddry's Adult Swim series Childrens Hospital (and featuring a ton of Childrens Hospital alums, such as Erinn Hayes and Rob Huebel, among others), the thriller tells the story of two physicians working at a children's hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, where they discover a potentially devastating virus — and a potential government conspiracy.

Ares

This psychological horror series (and Netflix's first Dutch original series) revolves around a secret student society in Amsterdam and two friends who join it, only to find out the club is far more menacing than it initially seemed.

The Ghost Bride

Set in Colonial-era Malacca, this Malaysian drama tells the story of a woman who receives an unusual offer: to become the ghost bride of a wealthy family's recently deceased son.

October Faction

Based on the comic by Steve Niles, this sci-fi series will follow monster-hunting husband-and-wife team Fred and Deloris Allen (played by J.C. MacKenzie and Tamara Taylor) who return with their two children to their hometown in upstate New York, only to discover their new small-town setting isn't as peaceful as it once seemed.

Next in Fashion

Starring Alexa Chung and Queer Eye [15]'s Tan France, this reality competition series pits 18 aspiring fashion designers against one another as they face challenges based on different influential trends or design styles.

Omniscient

This eerie series is set in the future, revolving around a society under constant Big-Brother-like surveillance and a murder that is somehow committed without being captured by the 24/7 drone.

The Stranger

Based on the Harlan Coben novel of the same name, this mystery thriller revolves around a family man with a seemingly perfect life and the conspiracy that shatters his illusion, forcing him on a quest for the truth.

Black Moon

Set in 17th-century Celleno — a ghost village in the province of Viterbo, Italy — this drama centres on a teenage midwife who's accused of using witchcraft, forcing her to flee from her village with her younger brother in tow.

Inspired by Norse mythology, this Norwegian coming-of-age series takes place in a fictitious town of Edda, following the bizarre weather patterns caused by global warming, which seem to be headed for another Ragnarok.

Human Resources

This Big Mouth spinoff [21] takes viewers into the world of the hormone monsters, following their office dynamics and training process. Big Mouth creators Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg are also the masterminds behind this animated comedy.

Selena: The Series

The Walking Dead [22]'s Christian Serratos [23] stars in this biographical drama [24] as the titular Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, a talented young Tejano performer who was tragically and unexpectedly killed in 1995 at the age of 23.

Space Force

Created by Greg Daniels and Steve Carell [25], this workplace comedy [26] revolves around the people tasked with establishing the new sixth branch of the armed services: Space Force. Along with Carell, who also stars, other cast members include John Malkovich and Ben Schwartz.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler, this reimagining of King Arthur's coming-of-age legend stars Katherine Langford as Nimue, a teen destined to become the Lady of the Lake, who teams up with Arthur, a mercenary, in order to deliver an ancient sword to Merlin.

This Brazilian supernatural thriller takes place in Liberdade, a neighbourhood in São Paulo known for its sizable Japanese community, revolving around a group of five residents who inadvertently bring Japanese Shinto spirits into the world, which sets off a dark chain of events.

The Eddy

Set in Paris, this musical drama stars André Holland and Amandla Stenberg as a failed NYC jazz pianist-turned-failing club owner and his daughter, who shows up unexpectedly from New York and throws a wrench into her father's freewheeling lifestyle.

Behind Her Eyes

Adapted from the 2017 novel of the same name by Sarah Pinborough, this British psychological thriller revolves around a twisted love triangle between a single mother, her new boss, and his wife, with whom the mother develops a strange friendship.

Bridgerton

Inspired by Julia Quinn's bestselling novels, Shonda Rhimes's first original series for Netflix takes place during England's early 1800s Regency period, following the love affairs of a diverse group of high-society members. Though you won't actually see her in the series, Julie Andrews will play a major part as the voice of Lady Whistledown, an anonymous gossip columnist.

Based on the YA book series Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, this holiday comedy stars Austin Abrams and Midori Francis as the titular Dash and Lily, two strangers who meet through a red notebook left on a bookstore shelf and the series of challenges that eventually bring them together.

Ginny & Georgia

This mother-daughter drama [27] stars Brianne Howey and newcomer Antonia Gentry as a 30-year-old mom and her angsty 15-year-old daughter who, after years on the road, finally settle down in a picturesque New England town where they get a chance at a normal life — if only they can outrun Georgia's past.

Unorthodox

Based on a memoir of the same name by Deborah Feldman, this part-Yiddish series follows a young Orthodox woman (played by Shira Haas) who decides to leave her arranged marriage and strict religious sect behind in New York and escape on her own to Berlin.

Outer Banks

Starring Madelyn Cline (whom you might recognise from Boy Erased and Vice Principals) and several other up-and-coming young actors, this YA drama is set on the Outer Banks [29] of North Carolina, following a close-knit group of teens as they attempt to find the father of their ringleader — who went missing while trying to salvage a sunken ship — and instead find a mysterious treasure map.

Never Have I Ever

Produced by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, this comedy series tells the story and struggles of a modern first-generation Indian-American teen, played by newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan [30]. Tennis legend John McEnroe is serving as narrator, as Ramakrishnan's late father was a big fan of the tennis bad boy (as were Kaling's own parents).

Tiny Pretty Things

Based on the YA book series of the same name by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton, this drama is set in the world of Chicago's only elite ballet academy, The Archer School, and the dancers of all different backgrounds who attend. Sweet Magnolias

Based on the novels by Sherryl Woods, this romantic drama series follows the lives of three women who've been besties since high school as they navigate the complexities of marriage and family in their small hometown of Serenity, SC. JoAnna Garcia Swisher stars in the series as Maddie Townsend, with Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley playing her two best friends and Jamie Lynn Spears [31] playing Noreen Fitzgibbons, the newest resident of Serenity.

Anya Taylor-Joy stars in this drama — which is set during the Cold War era and based on Walter Tevis's novel of the same name — as an orphaned chess prodigy who aspires to become the greatest chess player in the world.

Madam C.J. Walker

Based on the biography On Her Own Ground by A'Lelia Bundles, this series follows the true story [32] of Madam C.J. Walker, a black haircare entrepreneur [33] who became the first African American self-made millionaire. Octavia Spencer plays the titular Walker, with other cast members including Tiffany Haddish, Blair Underwood, Garrett Morris, and Bill Bellamy.

Jupiter's Legacy

Based on the comic series of the same name by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, this epic series tells the story of the world's first generation of superheroes, dating back to their origins in the 1930s through their current status as revered legends whose expectations are impossible to live up to. Inventing Anna

Inspired by Jessica Pressler's article for New York Magazine, "How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People," [42]this wild (and totally true) series [43] stars Julia Garner as Anna Delvey [44] (born Anna Sorokin), a fake heiress who managed to con her way into NYC's high society. Shonda Rhimes and her Shondaland partner, Betsy Beers, are executive producing, and Anna Chlumsky costars as Vivian, the journalist investigating Delvey.
