7 Moments That Made the 2022 Oscars Unforgettable

It's always a best moment when Beyoncé is involved. The singer opened the night with a performance of her Oscar-nominated "King Richard" song, "Be Alive." Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that she did so with her daughter Blue Ivy dancing front and centre as well.

Early in the show, cohost Regina Hall made a joke about several actors whose COVID tests had supposedly failed. As part of the joke, she insisted that they needed to do further testing, which led to her patting down Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa. The joke went over well with the audience (and Momoa himself, who thanked Hall for her thorough testing), though some viewers at home had mixed feelings about her patting men down, even if it was part of a bit.

Just a week ago, "West Side Story" actress Rachel Zegler revealed she wasn't invited to the Oscars, despite her movie being up for several awards. She said on social media that she was hoping for a miracle invite at the last minute — and she got it. She was at the award show to present an award alongside "Euphoria" star Jacob Elordi, and she was quick to poke fun at her last-minute invitation. She said on stage, "I never thought that I would be here . . . six days ago." We love that she can make light of a weird situation!

With Ariana DeBose's Oscar win for best supporting actress for her role of Anita in "West Side Story," she became not just the first Afro-Latinx person to win an acting award, but also the first openly queer person to do so. In her speech, she said, "Now you see why Anita says, 'I want to be in America,' because even in this weary world that we live in, dreams come true."

The best documentary short award went to "The Queen of Basketball," which director Ben Proudfoot accepted. The documentary, which is centreed on Lusia "Lucy" Harris, gave Proudfoot an opening to send a message to President Joe Biden about WNBA player Brittney Griner, who was detained at a Russian airport after officials claimed they found vape cartridges in her luggage. After acknowledging the magic of women's sports in his speech, Proudfoot closed with, "And one last thing: President Biden, bring Brittney Griner home. Thank you."

"CODA" star Troy Kotsur made history as the first deaf man to win an Oscar for acting when he won for best supporting actor for his role in the Apple TV+ film. He took the stage to sign his many thanks to the Academy, and there wasn't a dry in the house or at home after the audience signed their applause in congratulations.

For the performance of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from "Encanto," Megan Thee Stallion joined Becky G and Luis Fonsi on stage to insert a rap verse for a remixed version of the popular song. Though the song wasn't nominated for best original song, the stars gave the performance of a lifetime anyway.
