Were Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire Edited Out of the Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer?

When the second Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer dropped [1] on Nov. 16, we got a closer look at exactly what's going on with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) [2] after his cover as Spider-Man is blown in the Marvel franchise's second film, Spider-Man: Far From Home. The action-packed new trailer [3] — which brings in a ton of villains from the Spiderverse — may or may not have subtle hints pointing to the possibility that some of the Spider-Men of yesteryear will make a return in this film as well. Fans are convinced Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, who both played the superhero in the Sony adaptations of Spider-Man, are part of this new film.

At its core, the fans' theory is that because the movie introduces old villains from alternate universes into the MCU, it stands to reason that old Spider-Men can also cross over into Tom Holland's Spider-verse as well. This trailer seems to bolster the theory. Not only do Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) from Maguire's Spider-Man appear in the trailer, but so does Electro (Jamie Foxx) from Garfield's run. So who better to go up against these old villains than the Spider-Men who originally faced them?

One Twitter user pointed out that while Holland is jumping toward Sandman during the big fight scene at the end of the trailer, not all the villains in the shot seem to have their eyes trained on him. Actually, they all seem to be jumping toward nothing.

So who might they be looking at? Perhaps another Spider-Man that's been photoshopped out of the trailer to avoid spoiling their appearance?

If you look at the last scene when Lizard, Sandman and Electro are on the scaffolding… when Holland Jumps toward them.. look at Lizard .. he looks like he's jumping toward someone else.. not Tom..maybe the other Spider-men were edited out for the trailer.

Then there's the last shot of the trailer: a super-zoom of Spider-Man reaching for MJ (Zendaya) — but is it actually Holland? Twitter is convinced this part of the trailer was edited to only show their hands to hide the fact that Garfield's Spider-Man will be the one to save MJ. As one avid viewer pointed out, this twist would serve as closure for Garfield's Peter Parker, who could not save MJ (Emma Stone) in his universe.

You can't look at this screenshot from the trailer and not get all the vibes from the Spider-Men of years gone by.

As for Garfield, he's still denying he's part of Spider-Man: No Way Home [8], including during his most recent appearance on Today on Nov. 15. "Listen, I'm not in the film," he said. "I love Spider-Man, I always have, I was so happy to have played the part. I'm so excited to see what they do with the third one." Still, we're sceptical [9]. Fans spotted Zendaya and Tobey Maguire dining at the same L.A. restaurant [10] on Nov. 14, and that is pretty sus, no?

As compelling as these fan theories are, we probably won't know for sure if Maguire and Garfield are returning to the Spider-verse until Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres on Dec. 17.
