Spinning Out: Netflix's Upcoming Ice Skating Show Features a Gold-Medal-Worthy Cast

06/12/2019 - 09:45 PM

The cast of Netflix's Spinning Out has had a little bit of Olympic-worthy drama behind the scenes. Originally, Emma Roberts was attached to star as the ambitious young skater at the centre of the figure skating drama [1], but departed in Oct. 2018 due to scheduling conflicts [2]. Now, however, the full cast has been announced for the Netflix original series [3], and the series is moving forward and set to debut sometime in 2020. The final version of the cast includes several familiar faces you'll recognise from teen dramas, blockbuster movies, and more — plus a real-life Olympic figure skater [4]! Ahead, check out everyone you can expect to see hitting the ice when Spinning Out debuts on Netflix.

Kaya Scodelario as Kat Baker

Scodelario plays Kat, a singles skater who switches to pairs after a disastrous fall. She's probably best known for her role as Effie in Skins, the adventure franchises The Maze Runner and Pirates of the Caribbean, and most recently as Ted Bundy's wife Carol Ann Boone in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile.

Evan Roderick as Justin Davis

As bad-boy skater Justin, Roderick is a relative newcomer, with his biggest project being a recurring role as Officer Nick Anastas on Arrow. He does bring one very important kind of expertise to the show, though: he was a top-tier college hockey player before injuries took him out of the game.

January Jones as Carol Baker

The Mad Men [5] and X-Men star is set to play Carol Baker, mother to two skating daughters. According to Deadline, Carol is "a former high-level figure skater [6] who had to forfeit her dreams when she became pregnant with her oldest daughter at a young age. The head of the Baker family, Carol fiercely pushes both her girls to become Olympians in order to fulfil the dream she could never achieve herself. Simultaneously, she struggles with personal demons that threaten to ruin her relationship with her daughters, the thing she values about all else."

Willow Shields as Serena Baker

The role of Kat's determined, disciplined sister Serena isn't the first time Shields has played a significant little sister. You know her best as Rue Everdeen from The Hunger Games!

Will Kemp as Mitch

Kemp plays Mitch [7], who, according to Deadline, is a charming top-tier coach who agrees to take on Serena as a student. He's probably best known to audiences as Lord Darnley, husband of Mary Queen of Scots on The CW's Reign.

Johnny Weir as Gabe

As a real-life Olympian, Weir competed in the men's singles discipline, but on screen, he'll play Gabe, a fiercely competitive pairs skater who hides behind a very mellow exterior.

Sarah Wright Olsen as Mandy Davis

Olsen is set to play Mandy, Justin's real estate agent stepmother who married his widower father. Parks and Recreation fans might remember her small recurring role as Millicent Gergich!

Kaitlyn Leeb as Leah

Leeb, who had a recurring role on Shadowhunters as the wily vampire Camille Belcourt, will portray Leah, Gabe's mean-spirited, ruthless skating partner.

Mitchell Edwards as Marcus

As Marcus, Kat's bartender coworker, Edwards plays a skiier who's trying to make his mark in a sport that's historically dominated by white men. This isn't his first foray into sports roles: he plays Cameron on All American.

Amanda Zhou as Jenn

Kat's best friend Jenn is played by Zhou, a Canadian actress with mostly small roles on her resume so far. Jenn, the daughter of Chinese immigrants, is a fellow skater who also happens to be one of Serena's biggest rivals.
