All the Familiar Faces From the BBC's Small Axe: Education

14/12/2020 - 03:30 PM

Steve McQueen's incredible new film series Small Axe [1] premiered its fifth and final installment, Education, last night, and like all the films so far, the cast list was something special. Previous films within the series have included appearances from John Boyega, who starred in episode three, Red, White and Blue; Micheal Ward [2], who appeared in episode two, Lover's Rock, and Letitia Wright, who starred in the first film, Mangrove. The fourth installment, Alex Wheatle [3], told the story of British novelist Alphonso Alex Wheatle MBE.

The latest film, Education, delves deep into the cracks within the British school system and, according to a statement sent to Bustle [4], is actually based on McQueen's own experience. "I had an unfortunate time growing up as a Black child in the British Education system," McQueen told the outlet. "Sadly, I was not alone. Before our research began, I had never heard of the 'Educationally Subnormal Schools' that were being formed in the 1970s in this country. As we dug deeper I realised there was a narrative within this neglect."

From BAFTA nominees [5] to stars of Top Boy, the actors involved in this star-studded series have been nothing short of awe inspiring. Check out the full cast for last night's film below.

Kenyah Sandy as Kingsley Smith

Breakout star Kenyah Sandy plays Kingsley Smith, a young boy plagued by the education system in the UK. He's sent to a "special" school after getting a low score on an IQ test, which ends up being the key to unravelling the web of injustice faced by many other West Indian families at that time.

Sharlene Whyte as Agnes Smith

Sharlene Whyte, known for her roles in Burnside and Spooks, plays Kingsley's mother, who struggles to see the difficulties faced by him during his school experience. She later meets Lydia Thomas and Hazel, who lead the charge in changing Kingsley's fate.

Tamara Lawrance as Stefanie Smith

Tamara Lawrance, known for her role in The Long Song, plays Kingsley's sister. A definite ally for Kingsley, she explores the idea of a future career in fashion, much to her father's dismay.

Daniel Francis as Esmond Smith

Daniel Francis, known for playing Dr Facilier in Once Upon a Time, plays Kingsley's father. He makes few appearances in Education, possibly a representation of his belief that hard manual labour is more important.

Naomi Ackie as Hazel

BAFTA Award winner Naomi Ackie [6], known for her role in Lady Macbeth, plays Hazel, a child psychologist who seeks to change the injustice of the UK school system.

Josette Simon as Lydia Thomas

Josette Simon OBE, known for her appearances in The Witches, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Wonder Woman, and The Witcher, plays Lydia Thomas, who leads a group of West Indian women fighting for change against the education system.
