The Craft Reboot Looks Like a Mix of Euphoria, CAOS, and Mean Girls in a Very Good Way

30/09/2020 - 01:20 AM

Just when I think I'm over reboots, someone's latest rendition pulls me back in! A remake of the spooky 90's classic The Craft [1] has long since been in the works, but it's finally scheduled to be released on-demand this Oct. 28, and hot damn, I'm excited. The trailer for the upcoming film dropped on Sept. 29, and it was the first official look that anyone has gotten. Not only did the footage highlight how different the remake is from the original, but it also hinted at several similarities — which includes the overall story.

The original film features Robin Tunney as a new high school transplant who quickly falls in with a coven of witches — played by Fairuza Balk, Rachel True, and Neve Campbell. The girls quickly fall into a deep hole of wreaking revenge on their high school bullies and it turns dark as they dabble deeper into dark magic. The Craft: Legacy follows a similar premise with a fresh coven getting up to trouble [2]. Hannah (Cailee Spaeny) and her mom (Michelle Monaghan) move to a new town to live with the older woman's new boyfriend (David Duchovny [3]) and his three sons. When bullies at school send Hannah crying into a stall, three classmates (Lovie Simone, Gideon Adlon, and Zoey Luna) welcome her into their circle as their magical "fourth."

This is where the very Gen Z element of the show comes into place, and reader, it's so pretty. The magical effects, the makeup, the clothes, it's so visually pleasing that I almost don't even care about it being completely different from the original. It already looks different, and I'm suitably distracted by that! But there is one very big element that differs from the original that I think will make Legacy stand out from its predecessor: it looks hella scary! From the spooky background music to the flashes of the girls' power lashing out in anger, it's shaking me a little more than the 1996 film (which I notably saw while I was still a child).

There are so many things I'm hoping to see in the film to differentiate it from the original, but I'm also excited to see the callbacks like the new line reading of "We are the weirdos, mister." Keep scrolling for some things I'd love to see in the Oct. 28 on-demand release of The Craft: Legacy.

A Sisterhood Between the Ladies

A coven is all about sisterhood and with a new crop of witches that calls for a different take on what that means. While The Craft has its example of friendship, Legacy is a chance to approach different dynamics with a new generation and I hope we get to see genuinely caring relationships between these four young women. Obviously, drama will get in the way but it'll feel more authentically devastating if the relationships feel real!

A New Kind of Magic

Much like The CW's Charmed remake, it looks like Legacy will also have a different take on magic than its predecessor. We aren't able to see much but it's decidedly more fantastical than the earthier original.

A Fabulous Upgrade in Fashion

Here's where the Emmy Award-winning Euphoria [4] comes in: every outfit and makeup look screams magical manic pixie girl, and I love it! Each witch has her unique sense of style but they're all beautifully made up in a way that I never cared to try in high school. Please give me all the outfit inspirations to Pin even though I'll never really attempt them in real life!

Callbacks to the Original

I know most remakes and reboots either do their best to stay as far away from the originals as possible or lean into their similarities hard, but I'm hoping Legacy will be a healthy balance of the two. It helps that things are a lot different than they were in the '90s so even characters' basic attitudes and interactions will be different to be relevant.

More Information on Invoking the Spirit and Manon

The original film brushed upon "Manon" and witches invoking the spirit, but only Nancy and Sarah were able to do so. How does Manon choose which witches can call upon the spirit and the strength of their powers? Is there a prerequisite? How many witches grow mad with power as Nancy did? I have a lot of questions and I'm hoping the film will give me some answers!

Some Familiar Faces

Sue me, I'd love to know what the original Craft witches are up to over 20 years later! The trailer teased a mention of Balk's Nancy when referencing what happens to witches who become a danger to themselves and other people. "They must be bound," one of the witches uttered, and I want to know more about what that means! What happened to Rochelle, Bonnie, and Sarah? Did they ever get their powers back? Tell us!

Anything to Scare the Bejeebers Out of Us

Look, it's spooky season and I'm looking to get shook. From the looks of the trailer, it's safe to say that Legacy will deliver in some way, whether that be in the form of jump-scares, frightful visuals, or serious mind f*cks. As a bit of a scaredy-cat, I'm hoping for more of the latter than the other two, but either way, I'll be happy just to be properly creeped out by the darn witchiness that is bound to be ahead.
