Elle Fanning Contemplates Murdering Nicholas Hoult in The Great Series Trailer

09/12/2020 - 02:30 PM

If you have a thing for period-piece satires like 2018's Oscar-nominated hit The Favourite [1] or whimsical takes on historical figures like Dickinson [2], then you're going to love Hulu's new series, The Great. Elle Fanning stars as Catherine the Great alongside Nicholas Hoult. Hoult plays her husband, Peter III of Russia, who ruled as Emperor of Russia for six months before being usurped by his wife.

The official synopsis of the series states that The Great is a "satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia's history." The show's first season follows Catherine's idealistic arrival in Russia, her arranged marriage to Emperor Peter, and her resolve to "kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military, and get the court onside." The usual to-do list for a newlywed!

By the trailer alone, we have a good feeling that The Great will do just as well as The Favourite did. Coincidentally, the series happens to be created, written, and executive produced by Tony McNamara, the Oscar-nominated writer behind the screenplay for The Favourite [3], so that's another point in its favour. The series also features a star-studded cast including Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, and Bayo Gbadamosi.

Watch the trailer above and get ready to dive into the depravity of The Great when it hits Channel 4 in the UK in January 2021.
