The New Adaptation of The Secret Garden Puts Mary in a New Time Period and an Even More Incredible Garden

Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic 1911 children's book, The Secret Garden, is getting a new film adaptation for a new generation. In the grand tradition of remakes and reboots [1], the film will put a new spin on the story, and if the trailer is anything to go by, the mysterious hidden garden is bigger and more magical than ever.

The last time the book was adapted for the screen (if you don't count the 2017 steampunk update [2]) was in 1993. That particular adaption, which starred Maggie Smith and introduced Kate Maberley as Mary Lennox [3], was well-loved and pretty faithful to the book. This new adaptation seems to be taking the source material more loosely, bringing the action forward to 1947 and creating a bigger and more elaborate setting with a little help from CGI. Dixie Egerickx stars as Mary, and she'll be joined by Amir Wilson as Dickon and Edan Hayhurst as Colin. It's safe to say these young stars are on the rise: Wilson is soon to be seen as Will in the His Dark Materials series [4], while Egerickx is following up The Secret Garden with a role in the highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel [5]. As for the key adult roles, they will be filled by two of the UK's most celebrated actors: Colin Firth [6] and Julie Walters. The film hits UK cinemas on April 17, 2020.
