Kai Parker's Legacies Episode Included Some Crazy Good Vampire Diaries Easter Eggs

07/02/2020 - 03:31 PM

Kai Parker is back and badder than ever! During Legacies [1] on Thursday night, the iconic Vampire Diaries [2] villain makes a special appearance when Alaric, Lizzie, and Josie get sent to his prison world. Though things don't exactly go well for the Saltzman family during their short visit with their psychotic relative — Kai ends up double-crossing them and escaping the prison world — the episode is certainly a fun treat for longtime fans. In addition to seeing the heretic back in action, there are quite a few nods to TVD in the episode, including mentions of Bonnie Bennett, a glimpse of the iconic Mystic Falls sign, and even the old Salvatore Boarding House. Keep scrolling for more fun Easter eggs from the episode ahead.

The Salvatore Boarding House

Since Kai's prison world was created before the Salvatore Boarding School opened, we get a glimpse of Damon and Stefan's home in its former glory during the episode. As an OG TVD fan, it's definitely nostalgic to see the Salvatore boarding house again. So many memories!

Kai Leaving a Video Message

The last time we saw Kai in the prison world, he was chained to a chair, forced to listen to a song he hates on the karaoke machine over and over. However, when Alaric pops into the bar during the recent episode, Kai is nowhere to be found. Instead, he has left a handy video explaining how he escaped. He even makes a reference to Damon, Bonnie, and Katherine in the clip! The moment is a fun callback to TVD season six when Kai left Bonnie a video on a camcorder explaining how he linked her life to Elena's.

Young Josie

The episode also includes an appearance from the young actress who played young Josie on TVD, Lily Rose Smith. In a flashback, we learn that when Josie was younger, she let out a group of troubled Salvatore Boarding School students by siphoning a barrier spell Alaric had placed on them. That night, they killed a group of humans and eventually got sent to Kai's prison world.

Kai's Drink of Choice, Zima

As Kai offers his niece Josie a bottle of flavoured vodka, he makes a reference to his favourite drink Zima. The alcoholic beverage was first released in 1993, which meant Kai had plenty of it in stock during his time in the 1994 prison world. When he tried to escape the prison world with Bonnie and Damon in TVD season six, he even put a bottle of it in his backpack in case he got "homesick."

Kai Forgetting Names

After all this time, Kai is still a jokester. During the episode, he refers to Josie and Lizzie as Joanie and Linda just like how he would constantly pronounce Stefan's name wrong and mimicked the iconic Silence Of The Lambs scene by referring to Caroline as Clarice.

Kai's Iconic Wave

When Kai and Alaric finally come face to face, Kai greets him by doing his signature wave.

Getting Chained Up

When Josie decides to team up with Kai, she chains her father Alaric to a chair so that he won't stop her. The irony that Alaric is chained up the exact same way Kai was when he first got to the prison world is certainly not lost on us.

Bonnie's Bear Mr. Cuddles

In effort to get answers from Kai, Josie tells him that she's hidden her sand clock with magic so that he can't see it. He then quips that the same thing happened to him with a teddy bear once, making reference to Bonnie's childhood toy, Mr. Cuddles.

Bennett Blood

There are quite a few nods to the Bennett witches as Kai talks about needing Bennett blood for the spell to get them out of the prison world.

The Mystic Falls Sign

As Lizzie drives back into town, we get a glimpse of the iconic "Welcome to Mystic Falls" sign as she crosses the border. It's especially emotional seeing that she's driving a police car just like her grandmother Sheriff Elizabeth Forbes.

Josette Laughlin

After Kai double-crosses Josie, he gives her a creepy kiss on the head before leaving her to die. The moment definitely gave me déjà vu to when Kai thanked Jo for giving him her magic after the merge. At the end of the episode, there's another reference to Jo when Kai tells Josie that she's a lot like her mother.

Kai Is a Monster

Throughout TVD, Kai was called a monster (among many other things) and Legacies really drives that point home with this episode. After double-crossing and outsmarting everyone once again, Kai reaches his true form as he dives head first into the Malivore pit, aka a literal hell dimension created to wipe the earth of "monsters."

Kai's Maniacal Laugh

When Kai crawls out of the Malivore pit and realises he actually escaped the prison world, he lets out a maniacal, toothy laugh just like he did in TVD season six before he escaped the 1903 prison and all hell broke loose. Something tells us the students at the Salvatore Boarding School better watch out!
