Jennifer Morrison's This Is Us Character Could Play a Big Role in Nicky's Story

It could be possible that the introduction of Cassidy's character is simply a means to help Nicky get to the place we seem him in the flash-forward. The last time we see Nicky in season three, he is still struggling with his alcoholism and hasn't yet come to terms with his PTSD from Vietnam. Perhaps Nicky and Cassidy will join forces to help each other work through their issues. She could even be the key to helping Nicky mend his relationship with his family, just like she wants to mend her relationship with her husband and son.

Of course, Cassidy could have an even bigger connection to Nicky. During the premiere, fans couldn't help but notice the weird look Cassidy gives Nicky as she walks by him. As we know, This Is Us never does anything by chance, so some fans are going as far as to say that she's actually Nicky's long-lost daughter. Though Nicky has never mentioned having a family of his own, there are also several years of his life we don't know about. In a flashback with Nicky and Jack, he even adds that he had a house once before moving into his trailer. Perhaps after the war, Nicky did have a relationship with someone before deciding to live as a recluse.

When Morrison was first cast on the series, one of the first theories fans had is that she would eventually be playing Kevin's love interest and the eventual mother of his son in the future. However, now that we know more about Cassidy, it seems less likely. Cassidy seems very adamant about getting her life together so she can return to her own husband and kids. Although, you never know what twists and turns This Is Us will come up with. As she helps Nicky overcome his issues and grow closer with his family, maybe she'll grow closer to Kevin as well.
