Miss Lucifer? These 12 Similar Shows Will Get You Through the Wait

09/11/2020 - 09:30 PM

The final season [1] of Lucifer [2] is still a little ways off, but in the meantime, if you're craving that particular blend of mystery and the supernatural [3], we've got plenty of other shows to recommend! Although there might not be another series that has the literal devil as its protagonist, the whole mythos of heaven, hell, angels, demons, and death [4] has inspired countless works over the years, including quite a few of the best shows currently available for streaming. Whether you're looking for something that's a little lighter and more humourous or you'd rather dive into another dark and twisty supernatural mystery, we've got a dozen shows that will take you to hell and back in the best possible way.

Angel

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off takes a more serialised and adult take on the supernatural world, more in line with Lucifer than with its predecessor's teen drama genre. Vampire Angel puts together a team of misfits with supernatural expertise to track down demonic threats and deal with his own personal demons along the way.

Constantine

The iconic DC Comics character may not be the devil, but he has no problem making deals with devils and demons. Like Lucifer, Constantine mixes the supernatural with the mystery procedural format, as the antihero exorcist of the title investigates strange happenings tied to the supernatural. As a bonus: although the show was cancelled in 2015, the character was folded into DC's Legends of Tomorrow a couple years later, so his story continues!

Evil

Just like Lucifer, Evil hangs out at the crossroads of paranormal horror and religious mythology. A forensic psychologist teams up with a tech contractor and a Catholic seminarian to track down and investigate reports of creepy, possibly supernatural occurrences.

Fringe

If you love the paranormal mystery aspects of Lucifer but want a break from the heavenly mythology, Fringe is a great option. The show centres on a possibly mad genius scientist with a very out-there history of research, his sarcastic estranged son, and an FBI agent who brings them in to investigate strange happenings and instead uncovers a universe-shattering conspiracy that's connected them all for years.

Good Omens

If you love the angels and demons lore of Lucifer, then Good Omens should be right up your alley! Based on the beloved Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett novel, the miniseries centres on the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale who have known each other for, well, eternity. They're stuck teaming up together to try to prevent literal Armageddon, with dark but often funny results.

The Good Place

After watching Lucifer's darker mythology, you might be in the mood for a lighter, funnier take on heaven and hell. Look no further than The Good Place, which starts when Eleanor Shellstrop is pretty sure that she got sent to the wrong place after death and slowly turns into one of the best and most philosophical sitcoms on TV.

Preacher

Just like on Lucifer, the religious and the dark paranormal collide in Preacher. A hard-drinking preacher goes through a major crisis of faith, just as he finds himself having to deal with a bizarre new power that allows him to literally command people to do his will.

Pushing Daisies

While Lucifer and Pushing Daisies both use supernatural powers to investigate bizarre mysteries, Pushing Daisies definitely takes a lighter tone. The quirky, colourful comedy centres on a pie-maker who has the power to bring back the dead with a touch — a power he uses to make bank by waking crime victims to "solve" their murders, until he brings back his childhood sweetheart for good.

Shadowhunters

Shadowhunters, based on Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments book series, offers a different twist on angel and demon mythology. The show's protagonists are a group of super-humans who have been chosen by an angel to wage war against demons that threaten to invade our world, all while dealing with an increasingly complex underworld full of other supernatural allies and foes.

Supernatural

One of TV's longest-running dramas has built its brand on crossing supernatural investigations with a complicated history of heaven and hell, just like Lucifer. Brothers Sam and Dean take up the family mantle of monster hunting, encountering angels, demons, God, and the devil, and every other celestial being you can imagine along the way.

The Vampire Diaries

Lucifer fans will find more morally-ambiguous supernatural beings to love on The Vampire Diaries. Brothers Damon and Stefan have been at odds for a century and a half, but things take an unexpected turn when they return to their hometown and meet an orphaned teenage girl who is an exact doppelganger of the woman they both loved back when they were still human.

Watch The Vampire Diaries on Netflix [15] when it lands.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

This version of Sabrina has a lot more in common with the dangerous devils of Lucifer than the quirky witches of the original Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Sabrina Spellman tries to balance her destiny as a powerful witch in the Church of Night with her desire to embrace her mortal life as a normal teenager with her friends and boyfriend. No matter how hard she tries, though, she can't ignore her supernatural fate.
