23/09/2020 - 12:10 AM

If you're looking for a fun and romantic escape, then you're going to love Netflix's forthcoming new series, Emily in Paris [1]. The series, which debuts on Oct. 2, stars Lily Collins as the titular Emily Cooper, a marketing exec from Chicago who moves to Paris after landing her dream job. Between the fashion and the romance, Emily in Paris [2] makes the City of Love look like a dreamscape, but of course, it's not the first series where Paris plays a major role. From rom-coms to period pieces to gritty dramas, there are plenty of awesome series set in Paris, and we've rounded up the best Paris-set series you can stream right now.

Call My Agent!

This comedy series is basically Entourage set in Paris, following three agents — Mathias, Gabriel and Andréa — at a Paris talent firm, A.S.K., as they struggle to keep their high-maintenance clients happy and their own sanity intact. The agents treat Paris like their playground, and you're sure to spot many notable hot spots and landmarks throughout the series.

The Eddy

This musical drama stars André Holland as a failed NYC jazz pianist who moves to Paris to open a jazz club, never expecting that his daughter (who's played by Amandla Stenberg) will unexpectedly show up and throw a wrench into his freewheeling lifestyle. Rather than using Paris as a glossy, postcard-ready backdrop, The Eddy shows Paris as it really is: an increasingly multicultural and multiethnic city.

Maison Close

Set in a luxury brothel in 1871 Paris, Maison Close follows three very different women — an ageing prostitute, a Madame, and a young woman who unwittingly becomes trapped by a pimp — as they attempt to escape their troubled circumstances. If you're looking to see a darker, seedier side of Paris, then this period drama is for you.

Watch Maison Close on Hulu [6].

The Hook Up Plan

In this comedy, heartbroken Parisian Elsa can't seem to get over her ex when she is unknowingly set up by her friends with a male escort — but what they don't expect is for Elsa to actually fall for him. There's no better setting for a rom-com series than the City of Love, and The Hook Up Plan proves it.

Family Business

This comedy series revolves around Joe, a down-on-his-luck family man who attempts to turn his father's kosher butcher shop into a marijuana coffee shop after learning that weed is going to be legalized in France. As well as being hilarious, Family Business offers an up-close-and-personal look at Paris' historic Marais district, which is known as one of the most important hubs of Jewish culture in Europe.

Spiral

Often compared to The Wire, this drama revolves around professional and private lives of police officers, lawyers, and judges at the Palais de Justice in Paris. The Palais de Justice may be located in the very heart of Paris, but Spiral shows viewers a side of Paris that we bet you've never seen before.

Vampires

This fantasy horror series tells the story of Doina, a half-human, half-vampire teen struggling to suppress her emerging powers while trying to live as a normal high schooler in modern-day Paris. Of course, hiding her abilities is made even more challenging for Doina when a secret vampire cult called The Community starts pursuing her.

Osmosis

Set in near-future Paris, this French sci-fi series is basically an extended episode of Black Mirror, following the effects of a dating app — created by tech company Osmosis and run by brother-sister duo Paul and Esther — that matches people with their supposed soulmates based on an algorithm that uses brain data and personal memories. You probably won't be so eager to book a trip to Paris after watching this one.

Find Me in Paris

In this teen dramedy, a Russian princess training to be a ballerina at the Paris Opera Ballet School in 1905 accidentally finds herself transported to 2018, where she must hide her identity and attempt to blend in until her boyfriend can rescue her. She never expects that she'll actually start to enjoy life in 2018 Paris, and it's hard to blame her, considering the beautiful setting.

Watch Find Me in Paris on Hulu [12].

A Very Secret Service

Set in 1960, this satirical comedy tells the story of André Merlaux, a young man who becomes a trainee officer with the French Secret Services at the height of the Cold War. You can expect plenty of espionage, double crossings, and hookups, all with the fun setting of Paris in the swinging '60s.

Braquo

This crime drama follows four police agents in the Hauts-de-Seine area of Paris, whose lives are disrupted after their colleague commits suicide after being accused of criminal misconduct. The agents then decide to go to great lengths of clear their colleague's name, and just like with Spiral, you shouldn't expect any fun or romance from this gritty Paris-set series.

The Bonfire of Destiny

The Bonfire of Destiny takes place around the time of the devastating 1897 fire in Paris (which is known as the Charity Bazaar Fire), following three women whose lives are forever changed following the tragedy. Like Maison Close, this harrowing period drama gives viewers a dark look at life in Paris towards the end of the 19th century.

La Mante

In this thriller series, a famous serial killer known as The Mantis is recruited by police when a copycat killer begins terrorizing Paris 25 years later. She agrees to help, but only on one condition: she wants to work alongside her estranged son, who's now a cop.

Criminal: France

As it's set entirely inside a police interview suite in Paris, this three-episode police interrogation series won't give you a great tour of the city. However, Criminal: France does offer a nail-biting drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Versailles

Set in 1667, this Franco-Canadian historical fiction series tells the story of King Louis XIV, following the conflict between the French nobility and the monarchy during the construction of the king's massive Palace of Versailles. Though a little outside of Paris itself, this series will tell you everything you've ever wanted to know about the gilded palace a few miles outside the city.

Emily in Paris

Lily Collins stars in this upcoming series (which debuts on Netflix on Oct. 2) as Emily Cooper, a marketing exec from Chicago who relocates to Paris after landing her dream job. You can expect lots of romance, drama, and incredibly chic outfits as Emily adjusts to life in a fabulous foreign city.
