The Best Thing About The Umbrella Academy Has to Be Their Outrageous Powers

Luther (Tom Hopper) has always been super strong, which is evidenced during flashbacks throughout The Umbrella Academy season one. His powers are amplified after he's injected with gorilla DNA in an attempt to save his life after a mission gone wrong. During season two, we see his strength on display in underground fights put on by Jack Ruby. While Luther is also durable (I mean, he was able to still fight while on fire during apocalypse 2.0), he's not impervious to everything; he did take one brutal beating after learning of Allison's marital status.

Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) took Diego (David Castañeda) down a few notches after the latter shows his skill for knife throwing during episode six, "A Light Supper." Diego doesn't just throw knives, though, he manipulates them to get them to go exactly where he wants them. In the season finale, we see that not only can he manipulate knives, but he can actually stop projectiles mid-air (as seen with the barrage of bullets from the Commission). On top of all this, he excels when it comes to hand-to-hand combat.

Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) can make anyone do whatever she says so long as she starts with "I heard a rumour . . ." Throughout season two, she struggles with whether or not she wants to use her powers, specifically after season one ended with her having her vocal chords cut by Vanya. When Lila uses Allison's power against her in the season two finale, Allison manages to overcome being "rumoured" herself. This suggests that she may become immune in the future to other's mind-controlling abilities.

Klaus's (Robert Sheehan) power is most easily explained by the "hello" and "goodbye" tattooed on his hands: he's a human Ouija Board. Klaus has struggled with his ability to commune with the dead all his life, using drugs and alcohol to tune the dead out. Towards the end of season one, Klaus discovers that he can actually manifest the dead into tangible beings, allowing Ben (Justin H. Min) to fight alongside his siblings. We see more of this at the beginning of season two, with Klaus using the ghosts of soldiers to fight the Soviets along with Ben. Klaus is also able to let the dead possess him, which Ben takes advantage of, leading to one of the most ridiculous fights I think I've ever seen.

Number Five's (Aidan Gallagher) ability to time travel is the catalyst for season two. Without him, the Hargreeves siblings would've been destroyed in the apocalypse. After ignoring his father's advice in season one and getting stuck in the future, Five is finally able to return to the past after years of experimenting. In season two, he realises that he's been trying to time travel on too grand of a scale and it's this realisation that serves as the tipping point for his family's survival in the finale.

Since Ben (Justin H. Min) is dead, we don't get to see much of his powers. What little we do see is thanks to Klaus (Robert Sheehan) manifesting him. However, we do know that he's able to produce cthulhu-like tentacles from his body (earning him the nickname "The Terror"). While it's not entirely clear if it's meant to be one of his powers or not, Ben plays a big part in getting Vanya to stop the oncoming apocalypse 2.0. He's able to bypass her energy barriers and enter into the inner corners of her mind, allowing her to reach inner peace. With the end of season two producing an alternate timeline where a very alive Ben is part of the Sparrow Academy, hopefully we get to see more from him in the future.

Vanya (Ellen Page) is initially told she doesn't have powers by Reginald (Colm Feore). She's led to believe she isn't special and is kept isolated from her siblings. It isn't until she stops taking her medicine in season one that her true power is unleashed; she's able to manipulate sound into nuclear-levels of energy. Suffering from amnesia without the baggage from her past, Vanya is able to unlock more of her power in season two. Vanya can apparently bring people back from the dead by passing her energy onto them, resulting in them being connected until she takes the energy back. She can also use her sound manipulation to float. Who knows what else Vanya will be able to do now that she knows who she is.
