We Just Got the Craziest WandaVision Episode So Far — Here Are All the "New" People

29/01/2021 - 10:45 PM

After three episodes of sitcom-themed confusion, WandaVision [1] finally gives us some answers in episode four — along with some new and familiar characters [2]! For the first time since the series began, the episode doesn't revolve around Wanda and Vision; instead, it's centreed on a few characters we've seen in Marvel projects before but never all together like this, as they look for answers about what's really happening [3] with this bizarre sitcom world.

The fourth episode brings in two fan-favourite characters who have long been suspected of playing a part in the story, while also expanding the story of one character we've already met [4] and introducing someone new who could be a great ally or a dangerous foe. Here's what to know about the characters who took the spotlight in this episode.

Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau

This isn't Parris's first episode, but it's the first one where she's basically the protagonist of the whole episode — and going by her real name, rather than her "Geraldine" alter ego. After waking up from having been snapped out of existence by Thanos, she learns that five years have passed and that her mother, Maria, died of cancer in the interim.

She returns to work at S.W.O.R.D., where, after being sent to investigate an apparent missing persons case, she discovers the strange mystery of Westview and gets sucked into (and eventually kicked out of) its sitcom bubble. At that point, she reveals what she's learned, or at least what she's pretty sure: Wanda's in control of it all.

Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo

When Monica arrives at the border of Westview, she meets with the FBI agent who's asked for S.W.O.R.D.'s help: Jimmy Woo, an ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent last seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp as the parole officer assigned to monitor Ant-Man's house arrest. He's had plenty of experience with weird stuff, which is why, when an informant of his goes missing in Westview, he quickly realises that something is very wrong — starting with the fact that the local police don't remember the town even existing.

As the investigation unfolds, we get confirmation of a popular theory: that Woo is the voice Wanda hears on the radio during the '60s episode. It's part of an attempt to contact Wanda within the bubble, although we see that most of his attempt gets "censored" out of the "broadcast" visible to the outside agents.

Kat Dennings as Dr. Darcy Lewis

Last seen in Thor: The Dark World, grad student Darcy has risen up in the world in the decade that's passed since then! Now an astrophysicist with a doctorate, Darcy is one of four elite scientists (in wildly differing fields) who are brought in by S.W.O.R.D. to try to figure out what's happening in Westview.

Darcy is the one who figures out that there's a signal emanating from the bubble — a mix of cosmic/magical energy and what turns out to be a broadcast signal — and sets up a way to "watch" the "episodes." Another fan theory gets proven true: she's the person watching TV [5] at the end of the first episode, watching and taking notes in front of a TV.

Josh Stamberg as Director Tyler Hayward

When Monica returns to work at S.W.O.R.D., she's greeted by the acting director of the organisation, Tyler Hayward, who she apparently knows from before the Blip. She learns that he became the director after Maria's death, and he's the one who sends her on the Westview missing persons case, apologetically telling her that it's a S.W.O.R.D. policy put in place by Maria: when (not if, but when) the Blipped operatives came back, they'd need to be kept on Earth missions for the time being.

Also worth noting: way back on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a character named Brian Hayward was an ex-soldier who got involved with the cyborg project called Project Centipede, which was revealed to be a HYDRA operation. Given the sneaky HYDRA imagery popping up throughout WandaVision [6] and Wanda's origins as the victim of HYDRA experiments, is this a coincidence or not?
