John Legend's Tiny Desk Concert Is a Powerful Reminder to "Speak the Truth" in Difficult Times

In difficult times, John Legend's soul-nourishing music manages to keep us feeling hopeful, and his recent Tiny Desk Concert has us feeling exactly that. As part of Tiny Desk's at-home series, Legend performed his concert in the Los Angeles office of his management company Friends at Work, backed by his seven-piece band from Philadelphia. During the performance, a screen in the background projected an image that read, "Speak the truth, even if your voice shakes." In light of the COVID-19 outbreak and the protests following the killing of George Floyd, Legend hopes his heartfelt performances of "Conversations in the Dark," "Bigger Love," and more will serve as reminders of hope, resilience, and love.

"I wrote all the songs before the pandemic, before we saw folks marching in the streets, mourning [the] life of George Floyd, expressing their outrage," Legend said. "But some of these songs feel even more appropriate now, feel like we need them more now then we did even when I wrote them. This song 'Bigger Love' is about the power of love to get us through tough times, the idea that when you have love, it makes you more resilient, it makes you more hopeful. And we all need a little dance break, too, right?" Watch Legend's full Tiny Desk Concert and enjoy more of his stunning performances here.
