ICYMI: The Watchmen Just Made History at the Emmys With a Whopping 26 Nominations

28/07/2020 - 09:05 PM

If you haven't jumped on the Watchmen [1] bandwagon yet, this year's Emmy nominations [2] might just convince you to. The HBO series just earned 26 nominations, making history as the show with the most nods this year (six more nominations than the runner-up show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and earning more than any other limited series since the current rules were established in 2015 [3].

Standout Regina King scored a well-deserved nomination for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie as the badass detective Angela Abar/Sister Night. Joining King are Jeremy Irons (outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie), Jean Smart (outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or movie), and Yahya Abdul-Mateen [4] II, Jovan Adepo, and Louis Gossett Jr., who nabbed three out of the six slots for outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie. Other nominations include three out of six slots for outstanding directing for a limited series, movie, or dramatic special, outstanding writing for a limited series, movie, or dramatic special, and outstanding limited series [5].

King and Adepo deserve their Emmy nominations for episode six, "This Extraordinary Being," alone. In the episode, Angela finds herself experiencing Will's memories as one of the first black officers on the New York police force in 1938, the Tulsa race massacre in 1921 [7], and his time as Hooded Justice. You can currently stream Watchmen on HBO [8] before the 2020 Emmy Awards air on ABC on Sept. 20.
