Joaquin Phoenix Might Have Set a Record For the Most Censored Golden Globes Speech

While some of the apparent bleeps at the Golden Globes [1] on Sunday were not so shocking after all [2], Joaquin Phoenix's acceptance speech was decidedly bleep-heavy. After winning the award [3] for best actor in a motion picture (drama) for playing the polarizing title role [4] in Joker [5], the notoriously unconventional actor gave a meandering speech that left viewers at home scratching their heads as they tried to make sense of the frequently-bleeped speech. Here's what we were able to piece together.

The first set of bleeps came early in Phoenix's speech, when he acknowledged his fellow nominees [9]: Christian Bale, Antonio Banderas, Adam Driver, and Jonathan Pryce. "To my fellow nominees, we all know there's no—" he began, before the camera cut away from him and the sound cut out for a significant amount of time. Viewers at home didn't know exactly what was said (although the length of the bleep made it clear it was more than just a single F-bomb), but his next sentence at least gave us some clues. "It's like this thing that's great to sell advertisements for the TV show," he continued. Presumably, then, that first bleep was covering a profane comment downplaying the value of awards like the Globes.

The Wrap was able to transcribe what he said in the room [10]: "We all know there's no f*cking competition between us. I'm your f*cking student." Phoenix continued in this vein as he finished addressing the four men he was nominated alongside. "I'm inspired by you, I'm so f*cking inspired."

Later in his speech, as he shifted into more political and social comments, Phoenix was once again bleeped out, but this time, it was easy to fill in the blanks. "Contrary to popular belief, I don't wanna rock the boat, but the boat is f*cking rocked," he said, specifically referring to the numerous political crises and natural/climate disasters rageing across the world. "We have to do more than [send positive thoughts]." Phoenix's speech made plenty of good points and rained plenty of praise on his fellow actors — it just took a bleep-heavy route to get there!
