Grey's Anatomy Is Sending Alex Karev Off With a Farewell Episode — Here's When It Airs

28/02/2020 - 10:42 PM

It's been over a month since Grey's Anatomy [Array] star Justin Chambers announced he was leaving the show in the middle of the 16th season [1], and fans will finally get some closure over his beloved character's abrupt exit. The show's March 5 episode will pay tribute to Alex Karev with a farewell-themed episode that will hopefully tie up loose ends in the long-running character's storyline without breaking fans' hearts too much [2].

A trailer for the episode dropped at the end of the Feb. 27 instalment and revealed that the goodbye episode is titled "Leave a Light On." The teaser featured images and clips of Chambers as Alex through the years, with A Great Big World's heart-wrenching anthem "Say Something" playing in the background. "After 16 seasons, we're saying goodbye to Dr. Alex Karev next Thursday," the promo reads. "See how his story ends." If anyone needed a sign that this episode will be a tearjerker, that's definitely it.

Despite being the show's official goodbye to Chambers and Alex, the actor himself will not return for the episode. His final appearance on the show aired on Nov. 14, with the following episode on Nov. 21 revealing that Alex has returned home to care for his ailing mother. There have been clues dropped over the last few episodes that hint at Alex's fate [3], largely by his onscreen wife Jo (Camilla Luddington), who said in the last episode, "He left me. I think he woke up one day and felt the need to escape his life and me."

Fans will have to wait and see how it all goes down when "Leave a Light On" airs on Thursday, March 5.
