Netflix's Locke & Key [1] is the latest comic-book series to debut on the streaming platform, and it's already getting tons of buzz [2]. Based on a horror-fantasy comic-book series [3], the creepy series [4] centres on a family who move to a "haunted" house and get swept up in a long-running war over supernatural keys that bestow powers. Since it's based on a comic series that ran for five years, we're already curious if there will be a second season.

"I think it's kind of TBD [5]," executive producer Carlton Cuse told IGN. "There's a lot of story. Season 2 is going to be great and we hope that Netflix will officially order the production of Season 2 and not just the [writer's] room. And I think by the end of Season 2 we'll have a better idea of how much story we have left and how much we want to do . . . I think there's a lot of story left."

So what does that mean, exactly? Usually, shows either get renewed and go back to work, or they don't, but in this case, Cuse explained in an earlier IGN interview [6], they're sort of in limbo. "We're writing Season 2. Even though it hasn't been greenlit. We're working in a room." The writers' head start is, in part, so they can figure out how long the show could run and find a way to craft an appropriate ending. "I think by the time we get to the end of the [first] season, we'll have a better sense of how much longer the show can go . . . We want to be sure that the ending works for the TV series and we're not just forcing ourselves into an ending for endings' sake. We want the ending to be something that really feels like it's the right conclusion for our story."

The first season of Locke & Key debuts in its entirety on Netflix on Friday, Feb. 7. As with most Netflix shows [7], it's likely that we won't know anything certain about its fate for a little while yet, but it's reassuring to know that the creative team will be ready to go with another set of amazing stories in the event of a renewal!
