Will There Be a Season 2 of Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries?

Calling All Internet Sleuths: There Are More Unsolved Mysteries Episodes on the Way

It looks like your days of crime-solving aren't over quite yet! Netflix recently revived the popular Unsolved Mysteries series, releasing six episodes of cases involving UFO sightings, family tragedies, and unexplained disappearances. But if you're like us and you've already binge-watched all six episodes, don't worry, because there are more on the way. However, you're going to have to wait a while. In an interview with Decider, a rep for the show revealed that season one consists of a total of 12 episodes. The first six premiered in July, and the remaining six will drop later this year, though no release date has been announced yet.

Now you're probably wondering whether a season two is in the cards, right? Well, we're still not totally sure. While there hasn't been an official confirmation, there is serious interest. "I'm hoping we'll be chatting with Netflix about a season two, but we haven't yet," cocreater Terry Dunn Meurer told Entertainment Weekly. "We already have some cases in mind if we do! We have a database of hundreds of stories that have come in through the years. Unfortunately, there are a lot of unsolved mysteries out there that we wish we could get exposure to all of them. It's so gratifying when we're able to bring people closure and our wish it to do this for more of them. That's the dream."

The original Unsolved Mysteries was hosted by the late Robert Stack, and when asked if the show would add a host if it got a second season, Meurer said she didn't think so. "I think that we thought long and hard about this and it was a tough decision to make. At this point, we feel like the decision was the right one. There's nobody that could really replace Bob," she said. "The other part of the decision was wanting the people whose stories we were talking about to tell their own stories. With this decision, we're able to spend more time with the people in the stories developing them as characters so the audience can get to know them better. This is something we were never able to do before in the original episodes. There's a lot of story content to cover and we never had enough time to spend with the characters in the stories."

If Unsolved Mysteries does score a renewal, don't expect any update episodes, either. "We would like to [have update episodes] but it's trickier on the streaming platform," Meurer explained. "I guess maybe we could produce an extra [episode]? But we're assuming that with social media if there's a significant update on any of these cases, it will probably be pushed out faster on there. If something happens, it'll happen very quickly if there's big news because a case got solved." Here's hoping we get a second season!
