We were blessed with some incredible movies in 2019 [1], such as Booksmart, The Farewell, and Midsommar, just to name a few. But for every awesome movie we got, there were probably at least five box office bombs. Not every movie aspires to be a cinematic masterpiece, of course. It doesn't matter whether a movie is high-brow, low-brow, or has a cast filled with A-list actors — bad writing and bad acting almost always make for a two-hour train wreck. While 2019's worst film flops don't make us love our favourite actors any less (we forgive you, Anne Hathaway [2] and John Travolta [3]), these 34 movies probably should have been left on the cutting-room floor.
What Men Want
This gender-swapped remake starring Taraji P. Henson showed so much promise, but ultimately, this cringey comedy wasn't what anyone wanted.
Glass
Fans were excited to see how this long-game trilogy would come together, but unfortunately, critics decided that the overly-ambitious movie lacked substance and failed to bring the story full-circle.
Poms
No one felt like cheering for this clichéd comedy, which — despite its stacked cast — ended up feeling forced rather than fun.
Wonder Park
No one found much of anything wonderful in this family-friendly fantasy film, which critics deemed upsetting, weirdly sombre, and — worst of all — just plain boring.
The Intruder
Dennis Quaid totally delivers as the overly-attached previous home owner, and yet this unoriginal thriller was still declared "gratuitously gruesome [5]" and "the very definition of cookie-cutter modern thriller moviemaking [6]."
The Curse of La Llorona
2018's The Nun was a letdown, and this latest contribution to The Conjuring universe was yet another disappointment, relying on cheap jump-scares rather than actual storytelling.
UglyDolls
A lot of big names lent their voices to this one, but that didn't stop this kids movie from feeling like a "derivative marketing exercise [7]."
Rambo: Last Blood
Full of racism, sadism, and way more blood than was necessary, Sylvester Stallone would have been better off turning down this indulgent addition to the Rambo franchise.
Gemini Man
Despite some pretty cool visuals and a winning performance from Will Smith [8], this ambitiously action-packed film is more of "an assault on your eyeballs [9]" than exciting.
Countdown
This forgettable horror film tried to squeeze in as many jump-scares as possible, but most critics were left counting down the time until the movie ended.
The Goldfinch
This highly-anticipated film adaptation failed to do Donna Tartt's novel justice, and critics thought the two-and-a-half-hour movie was devoid of direction, character development, and really any emotion whatsoever.
Dark Phoenix
We were all rooting for you, Sophie Turner, but this latest instalment in the X-Men franchise was unfortunately deemed a "stupendously dull series-ender [10]," lacking both wit and heart.
Men in Black: International
Despite starring the dream team of Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, this forgettable reboot felt like nothing more than a "baffling cash grab [11]."
The Kitchen
We would have never imagined that the trio of Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss [12] would let us down, but this movie couldn't seem to decide if it was a thriller or a drama, and it just ended up being a mess instead.
Lucy in the Sky
This sci-fi drama — which had sky-high ambitions and an all-star cast — never really left the ground, and despite its great potential, it turned out to be "a flimsy, effortful project [13]."
Miss Bala
The best part of this needless action remake: Gina Rodriguez. The worst part: just about everything else, which is why critics wrote this one off as "generic and uninspired [14]."
Playing with Fire
We don't think anyone was expecting this John Cena and Keegan-Michael Key-led comedy to be a cinematic classic, but its lame script and tired clichés failed to create even a spark.
Serenity
Starring Anne Hathaway [15] and Matthew McConaughey [16], this tired thriller tried to pull off an ambitious narrative twist, and though it certainly came as a shock, it wasn't necessarily in a good way.
The Death and Life of John F. Donovan
Due to its unnecessarily confusing three-story narrative and shallow delivery, this drama was deemed "a barely coherent mess [17]" — though at least you get to spend 123 minutes admiring Kit Harrington's perfect face.
Cats
To be fair, critics and fans alike had a bad feeling about this one from the moment that first trailer dropped. However, despite its purr-fect cast (which included Taylor Swift [18], Jennifer Hudson [19], James Cordon, Idis Elba, Judi Dench, Ian MacKellen, Rebel Wilson, and Jason Derulo, among others), critics declared that this adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical was nothing more than "a big-screen litter box [20] for the hammiest of stars to unload into."
The Haunting of Sharon Tate
Starring Hilary Duff [21], this exploitive dramatization was considered nothing more than a "run-of-the-mill home invasion thriller [22]" that left viewers haunted for all the wrong reasons.
The Fanatic
Try as he might, John Travolta [23]'s frenzied, boisterous performance as an obsessed fan only added to this campy movie's overall ridiculousness.
Hellboy
We love you, David Harbour, but this butchered reboot was deemed a hellish experience by nearly everyone who watched it.
Playmobil: The Movie
Accused of being a cheap knockoff to similar Lego-related movies, critics deemed this kids film to be dull, dumb, and enjoyable for neither adults nor kids.
A Score to Settle
Called both predictable and forgettable, this cookie-cutter revenge thriller starring Nicholas Cage didn't score well with critics or audiences.
Arctic Dogs
This animation had the awesome cast of voice actors and the cute concept, but it failed to provide any sort of cohesive plot, so critics gave this one a cold reception.
The Hustle
Anne Hathaway [24] and Rebel Wilson should have made a killer comedy duo, but this lackluster satire really just hustled anyone who saw it in theatres out of their money.
An Acceptable Loss
This unacceptably lame political thriller only succeeded in losing its audience, despite starring the dynamic duo of Tika Sumpter and Jamie Lee Curtis.
A Madea Family Funeral
Tyler Perry [25]'s long-running franchise probably should have ended a few movies ago, and this one felt like the final nail in the coffin.
Jexi
You'd think any movie starring Adam DeVine as a tech-obsessed pop culture writer and Rose Byre as his virtual assistant would be a winner, but this decidedly unfunny rom-com is far more regressive than riotous.
Replicas
Full of plot holes and incoherent scientific babbling, this sci-fi flop starring Keanu Reaves at least offered plenty of laughs — except they were all at the expense of the movie.
Jacob's Ladder
This horror remake wasn't just pointless — critics thought this "shabby, low-rent thriller [26]" was actually an insult to the original movie.
Mary
Even with Gary Oldman starring as the captain of a menacing ship, nothing could stop this mediocre suspense movie from sinking.

No matter how hard John Travolta [27] tried to pull off that Southern accent, this trite father-son racing drama wasn't just slow to accelerate — it barely made it around the track. At least it took home the prize for the worst movie of the year.
