Zac Efron Takes a Trip Back to "High School Musical"'s East High
Could this be the return of Troy Bolton? On 22 July, "High School Musical" alum Zac Efron posted on Instagram about his recent visit to his old East High stomping grounds, posing for a photo right in front of the famous Salt Lake City school. "Don't you . . . Forget about me ✊🏼," he captioned his post.
Efron's journey back to East High comes less than a month after his former Wildcat costar Vanessa Hudgens visited the school herself. On 26 June, the actor, who played Gabriella Montez in the film series, posted an Instagram video of her standing outside the school, set to her and Efron's iconic "Breaking Free" debut. "Do you remember in kindergarten how you'd meet a kid and know nothing about them, then 10 seconds later you're playing like you're best friends because you didn't have to be anything but yourself?" she wrote in a caption, referencing her character's line from the first movie.
These trips down memory lane could potentially be hinting at future appearances from Efron and Hudgens in the High School Musical franchise's TV spinoff, "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" — which premieres its third season on 27 July. Neither actor has confirmed whether or not that'll happen (yet). However, their former costars Lucas Grabeel (who played Ryan Evans) and KayCee Stroh (who starred as Martha Cox) both had cameos in season one, so it's certainly a possibility.
When "HSMTMTS" debuted in January 2020, showrunner Tim Federle explained to Digital Spy how he found the balance in bringing in old "High School Musical" characters while giving his show its own identity. "When we came up with the concept of the show, and I was like, 'Look, it's a group of new theatre students at this school', I didn't want us to have to get any of the original cast members," he said. "I wanted the show to kind of stand on its own two feet." That being said, Federle is still very much open to the idea of having Troy make an appearance at some point. "[I]f you happen to be out and see Zac Efron, please mention it to him," he said. "I'd love for him to give me a call."
Efron is also down to star in a fourth High School Musical movie, should the film series ever get rebooted. In May, he told E! News, "My heart's still there, so that would be incredible. I hope it happens. And I think everybody would love to get involved. I'll try to keep them moving in the right direction."
