Diamonds Are Forever For Alexander Wang at Balenciaga
What's this? Alexander Wang using pastels, tulle, and diamonds? The king of luxe sportswear had a few more feminine tricks up his sleeve for Balenciaga this season, but before you think he's started embellishing gowns with bling, when we say diamonds, we're talking the shape, not the rock. Inspired by the tiled floor of Cristobal Balenciaga's atelier, angular paillettes covered sheer calf-length dresses and skirts with sexy off-the-shoulder silhouettes and gathered sheer sleeves that took his sporty aesthetic straight through to cocktail hour, perfect for front-row fan Kim Kardashian.
Elsewhere, surprises came in the form of tabard-like cover-ups, coats, and dresses in variations of a holey mesh that resembled the stretchy coverings found on fruit (it was actually inspired by the breathable performance wear worn by cyclists). These sporty separates came in shades of lavender, black, beige, and white and matched sporty playsuits and slinky pencil dresses with jewelled panels and sharp-shouldered detail in a heavier version of that same diamond mesh. There was plenty to get excited about, but we're going to need some big knickers to wear a lot of it next Spring!
